I'm not saying it became horrible after that, it's still Yu-Gi-Oh. It's just that what I find annoying in anime is when some harmless game like Duel Monsters is created, and then after a while it becomes so serious that the fate of the world rests on it.
I don't think the fate of the world was ever compromised, but I can't even remember Marik's motivation.
But really puggsoy, what's funny is that this picture you're getting, is backwards, mainly because of 4kids.
The original Yu-Gi-Oh manga had PLENTY of violence and games to the death chapters, most people Yami would fight against would end up getting a gruesome punishment. Then the card games started and it got milder. Almost 0 death duels. Then Battle City stayed on the same boat, with a little more danger, but still.
The thing is, the (second and more well known) anime picks up on the more "gentle" part of the series, it's not that dangerous or violent, even on the original japanese version, but there are plenty of things that 4kids masked to make it look like they would just be sent to the "dark world" instead of actual death.
Bottom line, Yu-Gi-Oh was always "serious", so they didn't really get that much away from how the series started.
