Actually, the first first season (or season zero whatever) was pretty serious and deadly. Yami Yugi was pretty much evil, and challenged people to deadly games and stuff. He made this one guy go insane iirc, set a robber on fire, and mentally broke Mokuba (who ran a gang of 7-year olds with guns and tasers for some reason).

Holy shit something was wrong with Mokuba. He and Yami Yugi played capsule monsters, and if YY, Mokuba was going to cut his fingers off.

I'm not saying it became horrible after that, it's still Yu-Gi-Oh. It's just that what I find annoying in anime is when some harmless game like Duel Monsters is created, and then after a while it becomes so serious that the fate of the world rests on it.

I don't think the fate of the world was ever compromised, but I can't even remember Marik's motivation.

But really puggsoy, what's funny is that this picture you're getting, is backwards, mainly because of 4kids.

The original Yu-Gi-Oh manga had PLENTY of violence and games to the death chapters, most people Yami would fight against would end up getting a gruesome punishment. Then the card games started and it got milder. Almost 0 death duels. Then Battle City stayed on the same boat, with a little more danger, but still.

The thing is, the (second and more well known) anime picks up on the more "gentle" part of the series, it's not that dangerous or violent, even on the original japanese version, but there are plenty of things that 4kids masked to make it look like they would just be sent to the "dark world" instead of actual death.

Bottom line, Yu-Gi-Oh was always "serious", so they didn't really get that much away from how the series started.

Then he returns and befriends Yami or shit like that. Gets crazier after that.. but when you see something like Digimon.. holy shit does it get rather dark after the first series (though, there's this dark water thing that was NEVER picked up on again, what the fuck is up wthat?).

Battle Spirits DOES follow the card game =/= world conquest or shit like that.. buy you want insanity, skip to episode 27. Generally most anime tends to have it's akward moments (anyone remember Kusha's knockout drink from SRW: The Animation (and other sequels, it's a running gag of sorts)?).

Then there's Guilty Crown, an anime I recently finished some two or three days ago. Starts pretty typical (Guy finds Girl, trying to be top shit) then, if you want dark you got it, as kids start killing eachother for their own gain and there was a planned bombing! (Also arms being cut off, but everybody does it), so afterward everyone goes starscream and plays the traitor game. In the end it's all about Shu abusing his power.. (Reminds me of Ben 10, who also abused his gift at one point)

@Envy & Maidsukki: See, that's what I mean. It's been ages so I barely remember any of this.

BTW, I just realised what "The Homunculus Envy" means. From Full Metal Alchemist, unless I'm much mistaken.

Oh shit those Sayonara Setsubou Sensei theories, it really blew my mind.
Where's Frario, he's the only one who watched this.

I liked how in Yugi Oh people would go "aaaaah" whey the holograms hit them.

Mysterious Girlfriend X is pretty darn great barring the main character but then again is the main character ever good

I mean, he's all right, but kind of annoying.

"It's Not My Fault I'm Not Popular!" is a new series, and I like it because I can sympathize with the main character. Not to mention it's actually fairly funny.

What theories? I'm a huge fan of this show, I'm curious now, I know the manga ended recently, is it something related to that?

It has one chapter left and mindblowing spoilers ahead:

welp welp welp welp

I usually find these theories to be pretty dumb, but this is some serious shit.

Oh god are we getting a Katte ni Kaizo-style ending? I know that was under different circumstances (even though, I think the author's pissed at some new Kodansha policy, the same reason the Negima author stopped suddenly), but shit.

WELP just found the last chapter. Gotta read.

Holy fucking shit my mind is so fucked right now I can't think properly.

Since Brazil will probably never get this, I'll have to buy the american volumes again (I have up to vol.5). I know that Del Rey stopped after 8 volumes and that Kodansha USA picked it up, but is it still going?
