Pokemon should be more about making fun creatures, not having to make a Pokemon equivalent out of every real life animal. Plus what about the ones that aren't based on animals, but inanimate objects?
Using the squid suggestion as an example, in the Pokemon world it would be kind of redundant when they already have Tentacruel, which serves the purpose of a Kraken-like monster. He shares traits between several tentacle-having real life creatures. He is, as already stated, more based on a jellyfish (lots of tendrils, poisonous), but nevertheless I feel like having a squid creature for the sake of a squid creature is redundant without bringing something new to the table, such as an interesting or rarely used type combination.
