I think what Rystar is referring to with the shading is that it's just a single line running along the outline of each section. That's something called banding, and it makes the sprites look beveled, like a button. A good idea would be to draw a line that follows the contour of the shape, then shade everything on one side. The same goes for the highlights, except that they should be smaller, unless there's a light source up against the sprite, like when Kirby uses his light ability, then you make the lit parts bigger and the dark parts smaller.
