This isn't a bad sprite, but it has some pretty obvious flaws
Your light source is all over the place, and your shading suffers from banding and pillowing issues; you follow the outlines of the sprite when you should be shading for depth
You also have several jagged lines and also straight lines, both of which distract the eye and break the flow of the sprite
I made an edit to illustrate what I mean
Now my edit isn't the best, and there are still flaws, but most of the ones I've addressed are gone
I made some line and layout tweaks as well to suit my preference, although i found some of the placement a bit odd
You really have come a long way Blur, you're right, and you've stayed with it for longer than most new comers to sprite work that have popped up around here
