Oh, it's totally fine to erase lines as you clean them up. the broad stroke method is supposed to encourage you to loosen up a bit and draw using more of your shoulder as opposed to your wrist. Also, different stroke styles can be used throughout a drawing, but for broad curves, broader strokes are a lot more useful. It may be more helpful, too, if you drew bigger to get a better feel for it.
