Every now and again the front page will have an "update", showing all the new submissions since the last update. When you revise a model, you can check this to specify that it should appear in the next update (even if it has already appeared in a previous one). You should only really do this if you're updating the model (as opposed to the icon or name), since that's the only change which is worth showing as a new submission.
As for the other questions, I'll leave those for someone who deals with model submissions.
