That checkbox actually only appears if you're revising the actual content but puggsoy had the rest correct. Generally, it should only be checked if you're making significant changes though. Minor edits don't justify re-appearing in the home page updates but major changes are worth highlighting.
As for your disappearing revisions, they're not actually submissions so they don't appear on your pending submissions page. You'll know when a revision is addressed via PM but if you want to be sure it's still in the queue, just look at the page in question. If there's a revision pending, the "revise" button won't show up.
Also, just so you're aware, revisions are in their own queue and new submissions being approved or rejected is a separate process.
