I actually just noticed one in Persona 5 yesterday. There are some advertisements in Shibuya with the child star character Rise from Persona 4.
Other than that, I definitely see where you're coming from with the series, and think this is a great explanation from someone that hasn't really been a fan of the series.
The few hurdles I would say you need to cross to really enjoy these games are:
Do you like anime?
Are you fine with lots of dialogue?
Are you willing to or able to devote 80-100 hours of your time?
Do you like grinding and repetitive rpg gameplay?(doesn't apply to 5 as much)
Do you enjoy getting to know made up video game characters?
If you can get by most of these, then you should be good. For me personally, I not only deal with these aspects, but quite enjoy them, so it's a good game for me.
