I think a lot of companies nowadays would rather wait before announcing a release date until they are damn certain, as backlash can be devastating if they keep pushing back dates or announce a date then miss it. They probably want to be a bit more set on a specific deadline before announcing anything. Porting can be difficult for a lot of things, so they may have some hoops to jump through they weren't expecting and want to avoid more fan disappointment.
I'm not sure, this is all hypothetical, but i just feel that it doesn't mean the game is cancelled or forgotten about yet
EDIT: I will also add, pc versions of games are usually more mod-friendly etc, so they may be adding some features that are more pc-specific to the steam version
