As far as making it not look like the source material, you did a decent job.

However, your choice of colours and lineart need some major work. Find an existing sprite that uses the colours you want, and borrow them. You'll get an indea of what kind of colours work well together and what don't.

Work on shading the pants to give it some depth. Look at the base sprites and see how they shaded their pants, and work from there. Good luck. Everyone has to start somewhere.

For a first edit it's pretty good, so a big thumbs up to you!
But those colours are much too wrong, keep trying don't give up! Making edits, making edits, la la la.
