Egg-Fighter - WIP
#1
Decided to try my hand at spriting something original. Using the Egg Pawns from Sonic Rush as a guide, I'm building some Egg Fighters from Sonic Unleashed.

Shading is troublesome, however. Any help/advise in that regard would be valuable. Smile

The shading is incredibly flat and the palette choice is utterly uninspiring.

As admitted, shading is not my strong suit. The colors are based from the Pawns from Sonic Rush.

Now, my question to you Alpha, is how can/would one shade this? A demonstration, a simple how-to, and I'd definitely try my best to fix all palatte issues.

you're shading just to shade
every new "artist" ever does this and i don't know why
it literally makes no sense

don't add shades to these just for the sake of having shades on here
add shades to add depth, and define forms

It's only sense to try, as no other recourse allows one to get good at something. Again, I just need a demonstration or a little advise on WHERE the issue with the shading is, so that I might improve the look of the sprite.

Judging by the comments thus far, I would assume I'm doing ok with the design of the bot and it's props.

So, can anyone kindly point me in the right direction to fix this humble effort up?

it would really be best for you to figure this out on your own, look at the shit in your sig
sonic is shaded for depth. you can see the different forms in there
they're shaded to show depth

you're shading just because

Not exactly. I'm shading similarly to the Pawns I have as reference on my sheet there. As far as I can tell, they are fairly alike in terms of shading (Notwithstanding SEGA's superior spriting efforts.)

So then, I just need to know: How would you shade this sprite? Is the lighting angle wrong, the shine in inappropiate places? I need details, something, ANYTHING...

well you may claim not to be shading 'just because', but it sure as hell looks like it
look at the shape of that thing, there's absolutely no reason to gradientshade the fuck out of the entire thing because it wouldn't be shaded like that

Well, now we are getting somewhere. A little direction goes a long way.

I was ATTEMPTING to emulate the Rush style shading on the Pawns for the Fighter. Since that seems off, I will try again.

Now, do you have any RECOMMENDATIONS or examples that might be of service?

see how the original sprite's shading makes it look like it's round?

Why not try and shade more like how that thing's shaded, rather than gradient from a corner?

Much appreciated. Will do my best and return with some properly shaded examples.
