Kirby Superstar made me fall in love with co-op games. Kirby's Dream Land 3 started this idea, but only one character could have an animal partner at a time...but KSS allowed the helper to have all the abilities Kirby had (well, most, anyway).
I really liked how each helper had their own sort of stats, too. some had lots of HP, some ran faster than others, some had better shields, etc. it made them seem like individual characters instead of just clones of Kirby and his abilities. it came to the point where I enjoyed playing as the helpers more than Kirby himself!
I practically wet my pants in excitement when KSSU came out...shame it didn't have Wifi.

How did I forget KSS? That game practically defines co-op for me. It has everything a co-op game should have and more. Not including it in your article would be a sin to gaming.
Also, how about Bonanza Bros. for the Sega Genesis?
It's a pretty fun game that doubles in fun in co-op mode.
Resident Evil 5. Obviously.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii. The game was practically made for Co-Op play, right down to the final boss against Bowser. Then there's Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, the first exclusive Multiplayer Zelda on a console. Mario Kart: Double Dash!! even has some Co-Op, as you can have one driver focus on steering, and another on shooting items.
And I suppose you really can't forget the Left 4 Dead franchise. Both games are shooters that pretty much /need to be/ played with more than one person.

Halo 3 (2007)
Halo has always been a series known for its multiplayer. The campaign itself has never been horrible either. But what sets Halo 3 apart from many other FPS's in this area was that it allowed for 4 player coop and did it well. While the campaign is rather short its incredibly fun to go through on legendary, look for the hidden skulls, throughout the levels, or even play around with the many glitches and easter eggs in it. If you're an FPS fan, have a 360, and have some friends to play with then this game is a blast.

That game is primarily Vs. Player; so no.

I am offended and disgusted that nobody has mentioned Zombies Ate My Neighbors. Nothing's better than watching your friend grab the potion that turns them into a hulking beast, smashing the hell out of everything, then getting caught off-guard when they turn back and you have to run in and save their ass. There is nothing better.
There's also Doom, but I dunno if Grooveman would count that as co-op centric or not. I know that I've played far more co-op matches than deathmatches, but maybe that's just me.
Also, would games like Team Fortress count? There's quite a bit of teamwork involved if you want to do well in a TF match.

Nope. Even though you're in a team, you're still playing against other human opponents.
Friendship-bonding games only, final destination.
