Pokemon VGC '10!
#91
i dont play pokemon for the competition with others, if i did i'd go play tennis or somehting productive instead. i play because i like pokemon, not to win, and if winning means using homogenized teams of homogenized pokemon with homogenized sets that IS NOT FUN period. even if i do win.

Stop making Pokémon serious business, dammit.

I thought one of the major things about playing a game (or going to a tournament no less, especially for those who drive miles and miles to go) was to win/have fun/not get beaten the first round you play. There is nothing wrong with using your own sets. You can use original sets that work without resorting to gimmicks or really crappy Pokemon, you just have to be intelligent as you go about it. There is also nothing wrong with using sets other people make, because if it works better then what you had in mind and fits on your team, then there is really no reason not to use it.

I like playing Pokemon because it's fun to play against other people, I end up having a good time. But I'm not going to let me wanting to be super original with every set stop me from using what works (nor will using what works stop me from creating my own sets/using uncommon Pokemon) because not doing either of those would lessen the experience the game has for me. Whether competitive or dicking around with friends over wifi, the game is still fun to me either way.

If anyone wants to read some stories people posted of their time at the VGCs, go ahead and read there. Might get a few team ideas, too.

thats perfectly fine and 100% understandable but again if i played somehting to win i would play tennis or something. i dont play to win though, i play to find an escape form every day life and be entertained (typically by my favorites). i've never been a competitive person and i'm groovey baby and tyvon haven't either. for us the fun isn't in winning it's the joy of battling and playing with friends and with our favorites regardless of if they are good or bad pokemon competitively.

EDIT: what im trying to say it THATS why we dont use what works even if we know what works. we dont play to win so we dont need a reason to create a team that works flawlessly. its more fun to try and topple the giant when your just using a stone and sling, rather that a rocket launcher. know what i mean?

you'd rather stay at home???

I'd rather
you know
be home and not have to be driven
like
six hours to some place I've never been to before
and then I'd be utterly fucked if something goes wrong on the way over

oh, and it's my gradumation weekend too

I'd want to go with my friends to this thing, but I figured it was an hour away at *most*
but at how far away this place is

The closest one for me is Chicago and thats 8 hours away, not to mention I'd much rather go camping with friends, than travel 8 hours to lose the first round.

also, i recently started using a persian.

persian @ focus sash
naive
ability: limber
252 SpA / 252 Spe / 6 HP
-Fake Out
-Hypnosis
-Taunt
-Icy Wind

Taunt is for those annoying ass smeargles, Fake Out is for everything else, Icy wind is... eh, and Hypnosis is to help out your partner pokemon set up (swords dance weavile, example)

Nice persian rhaimu

someone actually used icy wind on my crobat to make it slower than his smeargle so i couldnt taunt it, so if you ran that with smearlge it could be p. cool but i like you going rogue better.

Yes
Because one set one person makes has obviously never ever been thought up of by another person, ever.

oh so it just so happen to be the exact same persian that the 3rd place winner used before. right becuase everyone thinks of using persian to be an effective competitor in doubles i forgot

oh wait

Why not? It's just as fast as Ambipom, also has Technician, Taunt, as well as Icy wind and Hypnosis (the latter two Ambipom does not get). It essentially functions as a weaker Ambipom thats able to put the opponent to sleep and slow them down. Theres a whole bunch of stuff being used in doubles right now that no one has used before, whats on Skarmbliss aren't the only Pokemon everyone is running. In fact, if people are running Persian, that is probably the exact set they are running.

Also that thread was just made today; no one would have known what his team was otherwise. Rhymey said he's been using it for a few days now. (edit: welp, looking over his post again, he mentioned Swords Dance Weavile, nvm about that, point still stands).

When competing in doubles you're kinda strapped for moveslots. If you were to ever use Persian, Fake-Out/Icy Wind/Taunt would automatically spring to mind. Those are already extremely common moves as well, found on the sets of many different Pokemon in doubles. Being able to have all 3 on one Pokemon is a big bonus.

The only reason that comment struck me is because when playing doubles, or even singles, certain moves you're going to use are going to be a give in no matter what Pokemon you're using. If someone chooses the same Pokemon as you, well, guess what, if they are trying to win they're probably going to use the same exact moves.

Latias @ Toxic Orb
-Icy Wind
-Facade
-Psycho Shift
-???

Psycho Shift the Poison to your opponent; you keep getting Poisoned so you can do this over and over again.

Essentially I suppose you could do the same with say Alakazam, if you use Trick and swap something like that. One use only, though, so i think psycho shift is better, but..
