Huh. I only played the city elf origin the once, so I wouldn't know for that one X:

I'm not sure about the railroading actually, I've had a couple unfinished playthroughs but I'm usually playing much the same type of character, I'll have to change it up a bit I guess!

It's a shame, because the actual decisions you have to make are pretty awesome, but a lot of the things you make decisions on don't have much of an effect until the epilogue. Which makes sense, but it makes you feel sort of detached from it, like the decision doesn't matter all that much

The biggest problem DA has is Molyneux syndrome. I was expecting something as good as Baldur's Gate 2, and well... it's good, and I'll probably play it forever and ever like a dork, but it's nothing like as good as it was hyped up to be.

Then again, I'll probably play the shit out of Fable 3, because (and I hate to say this) I'm really kind of hyped for the Steampunk setting. The battle mechanics of the previous games were good but I just could not immerse myself in the setting. Moral choices be damned - I'll probably play it True Neutral anyway.

I personally like tolkien fantasy the best. In all honesty I like Fable 2 but I didn't like how guns came into the mix since it removed armor.

ugh tolkien fantasy is garbage. please explain to me how rugged crusty leather armor and fruity elves and overmanly dwarves with a hard on for the earth as staple elements are appealing at all? aside from the fact that every man either looks gay or 40 (oh wait thats not good either)

Honestly I don't see the point in trying to convince you. If I thought you would care I would actually explain. No matter what I say you wouldn't care, so why should I? You like what you like. I'm a fantasy writer this is what I like if you don't like it. Oh well I don't really care.
I may as well be convincing Justin Bieber to go Screamo it'll get the same results.

I like my fantasy to be a mix of sorts. I've been RPing in the same place for like 5 years now, and it's gotten to the point where even things we've taken from other settings are completely different.

If anything, I like a setting that functions as an actual world.

this post is completely correct
people talk about final fantasy being all about gay-looking guys and stuff, but i can't think of a single thing even remotely related to western-style fantasy that comes close to being anywhere near as good as FF-style fantasy.

And that's not just the japan nerd (weaboo for lack of a better term) in me talking, either.
While I'm not COMPLETELY opposed to WRPGs in the way that chad is, there is only a small percentage of them (1 or less percent) that I'll even give the time of day.

I honestly don't see how people find them appealing, but whatever.

FENCE OF TEXT TIME:

The main reason I dislike FF style fantasy is because of how... elaborate it is, in terms of design. They all look like fashionistas when they're meant to be like, saving the world. You are not going to a party you don't need to accessorise you need to stop a monster from eating your guts okay. Your armour consisting of huge metal shoulderpads and greaves with your stomach almost completely exposed might look nice if you're a complete twink but it's not going to do much to stop you getting EVISCERATED.

Maybe this boils down to my intense distaste for girly frilly shit.

I tend to prefer western style fantasy because it's usually more convincing (chainmail bikinis notwithstanding) and ultimately more human. Also (elves notwithstanding, fuck elves) the men actually look like men rather than children which is nice. :C

I'm never really going to convince you otherwise, I'm not really hateful towards FF or anything, it just isn't my cup of tea. I guess it's partly because I was really cool and popular as a kid and spent a lot of time playing DnD, so I'm always going to have a soft spot for that kind of thing. There's still a lot of shit in the genre though, and way too much "safe" tolkien stuff.

One thing I will definitely say in favour for jRPGs, even though they have a lot of elements I really, really don't like (angst and girly shit, basically), at least there's more surprises in it. You don't see, I dunno, Freya and go "Oh I know exactly what her entire race is going to be like, ugh".

That's actually something that annoyed me a bit about Dragon Age, now I think of it. The elves, despite being forest-dwelling as is the archetype, weren't the frilly magic-obsessed nature lovers that they usually are; they're very warlike (and have totally badass polynesian style tattoos), which was awesome. But the dwarves were... well, dwarves. I was really impressed when I came across their library / records, because having them as obsessive about history was kinda new, but they were still mostly miniature vikings. It would've been nice if they'd been made to be more scholarly, just for a change of pace.

I can totally understand people not liking Western fantasy, because there really is a lot of generic shit, and you have to dig a lot to find the good stuff. Also they tend to be Very Wordy and big on developing lots and lots of lore -- if you're as cool and attractive as I am, you'll be all over that shit, but I can understand other people finding it boring.

Dwarves do tend to be depressingly similar across all of their occurences. Dwarves that behave differently would be the exception - and probably tucked away in obscure Trad RPG settings and fantasy novels so the unwashed masses don't get to see 'em.

TBH I'm not a massive fan of fantasy races; partially because of the icky genetics about it (ARGH HALF BREEDING), and partially there's nothing there that can't be achieved with just different tribes/races/cultures of Human. They're all essentially Humans anyway; why veil it?
