Read six pages.
That, or:

I switched over to my laptop and averaged ~30-40 fps.
I /really/ need to hook my gaming rig back up.
Anyway I'm trying to learn the basics of survival mode.
Okay people, I started a new file and found these HUGE underground cave systems.
I kept on hearing monster noises in a monster-less place. I dug around because the monsters were probably there, in another cave, around me.
I kept digging and I found THIS.
The torch was placed by me, although the chests and cage were not. What is that cage anyways ? From what I've seen, the skeletons just appear/pop out of it.
Also, the noises heard were zombies, and I didn't find any yet.

btw you can use logs, wood, and sticks for smelting- logs burn the longest out of them. While coal burns longer, you can regrow wood so you don't have to go looking for it if you run out (not that you will in singleplayer, but I imagine with enough people in multiplayer it's not going to be easy to get coal.)

You can take advantage of it and build a contraption that kills the enemies and collect the drops, or you can destroy it and not have to worry about it. Also chests in dungeons can contain items that you can't get elsewhere.
Oh, ok.
Well I did a small expedition to sneak in and I managed to steal the items inside the two chests.
There were two saddles, an empty bucket, a few iron ingots, some string, and some redstone.
Stupid poor skeletons.

While logs do burn the longest, it's always better to use planks. Logs burn just as long as planks, and you get four with each log.

Lava burns the longest, derp. But obviously that consumes a bucket.
Can one of you guys do me a favour? Open the default skin in that Skin Editor that shows you the 3D model and take a few captures of the model, if you don't mind. I need it for an Article; but I don't have my Minecraft files to hand.
Specs 'n' Headphones has been revamped! Check it, yo.
Thanks to Pik and Solink; they are sexy people.

oh, whoops
forgot about lava
I've never used it since it's somewhat recent (and I have zero disposable iron and need all the buckets I can get)
how long does lava burn?
