The leatherwear trend within heavy metal pretty much started with this man:
That's Rob Halford of Judas Priest, one of the first real metal bands.
Where did that leather studded look come from originally?
Well, Rob Halford is gay, and is what's called a leatherdaddy. It's a common part of gay culture. It's like a hyper-caricature of bikers (bikers of course also being an influence on metal culture anyway)
Which is also where the guy from the Village people got it, being as it is that the Village People had a faux-gay act going on, they took a lot of ideas from the gay scene.

its the whole drugged out, overtly trashy, urban kind of feeling they have. I can feel kind of a "-core" style in here somewhere, as well. his hair is also horrible. its not a matter of change, its a matter of change for the worse.

its ideas might stem from similar things that DMC1 and 3 did, but its execution - and as such, the very tone of the product so far - is kind of a lot different.

i am also horribly turned off by the PRISON/REHAB/EXPERIMENTATION thing going on at the beginning.

You're right about the prison/experimentation/idkwtf thing though, for sure. That's just so tremendously overdone.
Also now I'm looking, unless it's just a poorly shot trailer- why are the backgrounds so airy looking? With the GRAR SO PUNK look shouldn't it be in some kind of oppressive grim cityscape?
Gritty and Dark is a complete dead horse, but apparently everyone's forgotten how ridiculous that aesthetic was when it was popular in comics in the '90s.
But that period did give us Deadpool and Lobo, hrm...

That being said, my problem with this is that they're marketing this guy as "Dante," when the only thing that's really "Dante" about him is the fact that he possesses Ebony and Ivory. Yeah, this is a reboot and everything, but so far, it looks like a bad reboot. DMC didn't even need a reboot, this could have just become its own franchise. Sure, people would label it as a DMC ripoff, but right now they're labeling it as a DMC bastardization. (And to an extent? It kinda is so far.)

But the trailer alone looks pretty cool and I'd like to see more. Maybe they can make this design likable.

the only problem that I have with this looks like it's changing from a formula that works and everyone really likes because of some urge to make it more generic and american to appeal more to the general non-gamer american market? (see: Castlevania Lord of Shadow)

it's almost like "yeah we aren't selling enough because clearly the gaming culture is so underground that making all of these changes will not make our miserably small fanbase cause us any losses nope", but then I realized that Capcom is, besides Valve, the most gamer-friendly company, so this reboot makes less and less sense to me :I I don't know, maybe we'll have to wait to find out. Maybe they are really just trying a different direction and having a take from another company.
