I am trying to learn the basics of spriting. I learned how to make a standing sprite, so I figured the next step would be movement and if its not please correct me. I have been learning game design for 2 months now and wanted to learn basic sprite information so I could put a school project together. Now if you could post some basic tutorials or offer some kind of help to further my progress that would be great. but I chose the title of this thread so I wouldn't be attacked for asking basic questions in the "Questions, Info, and Tutorials" section.

Even though you've made one sprite, it's not very good (this isn't a personal attack, I'm saying this truthfully.) You need to work on skills like understanding anatomy. Even though Brandman1996 is nice to you, he isn't giving criticism and won't help you make really good sprites. And Brandman, if one actually followed "Cure for Cancer"'s crits instead of taking them personally, he or she could improve a lot! Remember that. Aaaand I think this thread is past needing to be moved to Sprite Discussion or something. Thanked by: StarSock64, Iceman404

Arkinea,
I have a great respect for everyone on this forum that I have met so far and I would like to learn more but I dont know where to gain this knowledge on my own. I sometimes search google for the things I would like to know but that only takes me so far. If ANYONE can make suggestions and share some points of critism it would honestly make my day. I know my stuff is bad. this is literally random 15 minute periods of my day where I try to better myself and learn something. I'm not taking anything personally because I beleive everyone has good intentons but no one has linked me to any tutorials or anything helpful besides Brand. So if you are up to the task help a newbie out. Show me where I can learn what "sprite anatomy" is and help me get past these early stages of my learning. If you want to improve your spriting abilities, head over to the Spriting And Pixel Art board and post a thread there. On your comment about animations: No, animations are not the next step for you, you have a long ways to go if you want to attempt them, you're obviously lacking knowledge on a lot of fundamental skills and your work is suffering because of it. I feel like I'm rambling at this point, so the short version is this: Head over to sprite discussion and hopefully the fact that you're not amazing will hit you in the head at some point Thanked by: Chris2Balls [:B]

So google "how to draw anatomy". And then look through the results. Not enough results? Go to Deviantart and search "how to draw anatomy". (10-23-2010, 10:43 PM)Little_Wamp Wrote: search google for the things I would like to know but that only takes me so far Then I guess you should wander on over to DevArt and look there. There's hundreds upon thousands of tutorials, drawing streams and iScribble sessions spanning the internet. Just open your eyes and look. If you happen to make some sprites and want C+C, then post them and someone will help you refine them. Unless the sprites are really miniscule in quality, where starting over isn't a big deal. Then it's "Start over, use anatomy." Thanked by: Chris2Balls [:B], Nindo

In case it's still not clear enough I'll try it again:
You don't know how to sprite. You did not "learn how to make a standing sprite." You're not ready to make a game with custom sprites. Your sprite is not good, and you are not ready for animation. You need to learn the basics. This requires reading and dedication. You cannot learn this in a day or two either. There are tutorials in the spriting and pixel art section and the creativity section. If you're going to try to make something for a game, I can't really help you because you're not ready yet and you can't expect to be any time soon. If you still want to learn how to sprite and not do these other things, I suggest trying to make a sprite with more realistic proportions. It's a common misconception to newcomers that they can do small things with basic shapes, but that's no way to learn and despite what they may think they can't even do it properly. To learn art you have to do things that you might not like to do. You have to -read- about the human body, even though at times it can be boring, because it's not something you can automatically know or even learn easily from practice or observation. Even when it comes to simple characters, by learning more complicated anatomy you learn a lot of important principles along the way that are helpful for just about everything. So, if you just want this to be a quick process or something for fun, this really isn't the forum for you. If you're more serious about it and want to give it a try, you should try to make a more proportional sprite. You probably want specific links, but tbh I'm not even sure which would be best for a beginner since I first started learning from a book. I'd just suggest going to the art resources thread. I know somebody (I think metaru?) linked to this before, which is pretty helpful even though the drawings on it suck. However, those are more for drawing. The information is valuable but the 8-heads thing doesn't work as well on sprites. The spriting dictionary will give you all sorts of tips on techniques and is practically an essential read, and maybe it'll give you a better idea of what kind of proportions work on a sprite, or else you can try to look at some other ones. The concept of contrast is something to look at especially. I can say that figure drawing is really helpful for spriting even though it seems to sometimes be more associated with drawing. Jeez okay that's enough out of me, that was a lot of work. By the way if you had trouble reading the entirety of my post, reading about art's even worse...! edit: AHAHA look at all the posts that came while I was typing this Thanked by: Alpha Six, Chris2Balls [:B]
