Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are not the same.
Super Mario 64 was amazing for knowing how 3D games should work literally at first. Developers knew that with 3D worlds, there's much less linearity and more exploring. And that's because there are huge scenarios with tons of missions in each, because that works a lot better in 3D gameplay than just a linear stage like in the 2D Mario games.
Super Mario Galaxy works more like a 3D Super Mario Bros. 3, with more linear levels, but with a LOT of really cool original platforming gimmicks. It's "3D" is a mix of real 3D exploring, 2.5D, and something more like playing beat'em up games like Streets of Rage, that you got movement in X, Y and Z, but it's still linear. (kind of a 2D but with "depth" added in)

Also nothing can top Super Mario 64
absolutely nothing.
as much as i love sm64 its honestly the worst between it, sunshine and galaxy/2. :V
In my opinion it's alot better then any of the other ones since you can collect all the stars out of order.
Which actually puts so much emphasis on the game being non-linear
Sunshine felt too much like a gimmick
Galaxy was good if you can get past the camera
Not exactly sure on Galaxy 2, but I'm assuming it has the same camera issues.

I totally agree with this post.
It should have 10x more thanks.
You seriously just blew my mind.

Nope.
I know what you're talking about, and SMG2 is a LOT more fluid.

Sorry but I'd rather try the game myself before take everyone's opinion seriously if I am that skeptical about it.
Then try the game. :l
Don't put it down for a problem you think the game has, nor disregard anybody's possibly-conflicting opinions on it if you have no basis on it yourself.

but the only part that hooked me from smg2 was the sm64 levels :c
because we all know that nintendo could make a hi-res remake of smb64 and it would sell millions.

Galaxy 2 did address many of the faults of Galaxy 1, but also regressed some of the good things Galaxy 1 brought to the table. But I enjoyed the gameplay of Galaxy 2 more despite the disappointing final boss fight and bonus reward at the end.
Sunshine was a solid game, but I disliked the blue coin hunting and the unbalance in the difficulty in some of the levels. I mean there are two special courses that are a pain with one of the courses adding more pain to just unlock*. Don't forget boating in Corona Mountain either. That was bad having FLUDD to steer. I crashed a lot.
Now 64 is still my favorite 3D Mario regardless of the visuals not holding up well today. You had mostly complete freedom to do what you want when you want with the only hints to the stars you get is in the episode names. Plus Metal Mario's theme.
* There's this special course in Isle Delfino that needs Yoshi to unlock, but you had to take him across vast stretches of water via boats without drowning him or starving him. That was tedious. The special course that Yoshi unlocks is a poison river trip to collect 8 red coins.
The river instantly kills you if you fall in just as falling out of bounds kills you. And the only thing you get to help is a friggin' leaf boat that you use FLUDD to drive. And the boat takes on poison water too if you put too much weight on one side of the boat. I went in with 50 Marios and finally beat the damn thing on my last Mario.

that part of super mario sunshine still pisses me off even today just because of how hard it was.

Super Mario Galaxy 2's great, but the camera literally sucks.
You almost have no freedom with it zooming out all the time, messing up your controls, and getting stuck in-between walls. I'll never know why they don't just let it sit behind Mario. That would really bring out that "real" planet feeling, instead of it seeming like your just jumping across small balls 24/7.
This is yet another +1 for SM64.

I honestly don't get what's the big fuzz of SMG2's camera. It never fucked me up or got stuck behind or in-between walls. Super Mario 64's on the other hand, did.

Must be because the cameras don't have solid issues.
