Might I ask why it would matter if a hand held is region locked?

Hearing about it [importing games] frequently, and putting aside the wider selection of titles and localization issues, I hardly see the point of it.

oh boy i'm gonna buy Jump Ultimate Stars from playasia.com because it is a good game and has all of my favorite animes in it!!! I am fluent in japanese so there is no language barrier for me!!

oh boy it has finally arrived oh WELP MY AMERICAN DS WON'T ACCEPT THIS NIPPONESE CARTRIDGE I JUST LOST FIFTY BUCKS

i wonder WHY does region lock STILL EXIST. It serves zero purpose, specially in such a globalized world. Zero. It's only there just to alienate gamers who want to play some good games that don't get american/european versions or whatever because they're not popular enough or wouldn't "appeal to those audiences". Either that or to incentive players to pirate their fucking consoles.

I'm gonna go ahead and say this: even if it doesn't have a purpose, I'd rather buy a game in my own country then waste the time and money to import something here.

Simple as that. As much of a pain as it is it have it, It would probably be even more useless to get a game from another country for several reasons. You'd most likely end up wasting time to learn another language, or wasting more money because of import taxes, etc.

Also I think that you're forgetting that every audience has a different taste. If you think about it as a publisher you have to understand that you have to be sure people will take an interest in that said game before you import it. Hell I'm pretty sure the Big N didn't bother to release the tingle game because they feared no one would like it. Plus there's a little more to selling a game then trying to get cash or come up with excuses to "stop" piracy.

I dunno if you wrote this thinking of just you, but you seem to just ignore or assume a lot of stuff up:

Because Jump Ultimate Stars and many other DS games are all available on the US or even on other countries.

Because every country has games at reasonable prices that would make buying games in another country be a waste of money.

Because every person only knows one language ever and if they try to learn another one it's just to play a game that is not available for his/her own country.

And your third paragraph doesn't even make sense. I wasn't saying that there is no reason why certain companies wouldn't release games in certain regions at all.

Unless buying from another country gives a loss more significant than people pirating their consoles, I really don't see why region locks should exist.

edit: nvm, tak already cleared this up

So I tried this thing today at Best Buy.

I have to say, I was a nerd and closed my eyes and turned off the 3D function. I was impressed.
Then I turned the 3D to medium. WHOA. Something happened and my eyes felt like they just crossed...I turned it down for a bit and played a little. It was...alright, but I felt like glued to this thing. Minimal 3D actually looks nice.
Then, out of curiosity I turned the 3D to maximum. Big, big mistake. While WHOA I AM IN THE VIDEOGAME THIS IS AMAZING, happened, Within 3 minutes I felt nauseous and got a pretty nasty headache that's still buggin' me as we type. My eyes hurt like hell too right now. And this was eight hours ago.
I feel like a total whelp that can't call himself a serious gamer anymore because I now have motion sickness from a stupid portable Sad

Played Pilotwings Resort and it felt like a crap tech demo. You know, like EVERY Nintendo launch game - half-finished demo game with endless, repetitive gameplay. I actually liked the analog stick and the metallic, extending stylus. I liked the improved graphics engine as well - but really, the one thing I can't stand is that you HAVE to hold the console close to your face (well, about chest level) to get the full effect. And once you're doing this you're so intensely focused on the screen that it's hard to pay attention to anything else around you. I like how I can just pull my face out of a DS with no repercussions - but the 3DS really sucks you in! Which I guess is good, but at the same time that's a big flaw. I'm not going to want to play the 3DS out in public for this reason. I'll become a weird, cross-eyed social introvert :/

Personally, I'm gonna go for the second-model 3DS standard and wait until they announce the newest 3DS model (chances are it'll be a 3DS XL). I'm pretty sure I'll be getting one of these suckers down the line if not just for Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition (which makes this a day 1 console purchase alone; however I'm short of cash, too)

I can't wait until newspapers and television reports start making ugly news reports on it, esp. on the declining eyesight and eyestrain the 3DS is causing children.

Yeah of course Nintendo warns the public about young kids using it, but no one listens to warnings anymore

esp. americans and some english people :{

shoutouts to cutesu for the new av!
For people talking about eye strain, that literally only happens the first couple times you use it. I've also noticed that the sweet spot has gotten bigger the more I use it, as if my eyes are learning how to interact with the screen.

Well, i got mine right on Friday morning .It was bundled with Rayman3D and i also buyed Pilotwings and Street Fighter. After a small time of getting used to the 3d vision, it's a really great effect. Pilotwings provides a great sense of depth. (especially if you watch down in a replay video) And playing is with the slidepad is a real relevation opposed to the PSP's abysmal analog-nub. I can't wait for Zelda, Star Fox and Mario. But what i really hope for is a new 3D F-Zero with an soundtrack as awesome like X'

Just got my 3DS today with street fighter and pokemon white. I wanted to get pilotwings but it was sold out, and taxes would have killed me on that.

I have to say I am blown away, literally. I was expecting this to be good but I never thought that Nintendo would put this much effort in. I kinda want to write a review about it.

Also I have to say aside from the loading times, Normal DS games actually play very well on this.

Am I the only one thinking it's nearly impossible to play any of the AR game cards?

From my own personal experience with them, yes, yes you are. They play fine for me and are lots of fun.

EDIT- Also, if anyone is having trouble with the 3D, I found that it helps to adjust the slider while looking at the icon animation for the photo channel.

Or to stop people just importing games from countries with weaker economies and effectively crippling the games retail industry in their country of origin?

No wait, I take that back, they just do it because they don't want to let you play their games, developers hate people playing their games.

>developer still gets paid for the game
>crippled economy

The AR games are pretty frickin sweet but the 3d hurts my eyes. Very Sad
I look forward to my eyes getting used to it.

Got one with Street Fighter too. The 3D works really well but takes a little while to get used to. AR games and Face Raiders are a ton of fun, really awesome effects when the AR games move around whatever you've got them on.

Has anyone else gotten the AR Fishing game color trick to work? From what I've read, if you has a lot of a specific color in the BG, it will cause various things to happen and rarer fish to appear. For example, a BG thats mostly red will have Cheep Cheeps I believe while a blue BG will have minnows. I tried to get it to work by playing over a pure red shirt but it didn't seem to do anything.
