Rev Up Those Sonic Cycles

Quite a conundrum.

Depends on you.

I would get it on the 3DS because it's always great to play a good DS game in your bed just chillaxing.

Provided it's still coming out for the 3DS and PC (Sega reprinted their financial report and took off those two, although thats most likely because they want it to be a surprise) it would still come down to play style. I'm personally hoping that all 4 versions will play the same, but there is always a chance they will make the 3DS version different as is often seen when a console game also comes out on a handheld.

Either way, lets say they are all the same, I'd say get the 3DS version, if for only the reason stated above.

Man, I wonder how this game would look on Nintendo's future new system, the Project Cafe?

As I understand it, Sonic Adventure was made by Sonic Team in Japan. Sonic Adventure 2 was made by "Sonic Team USA", started by a few members of the old Adventure team (including Iizuka) who relocated to California. Supposedly it was handled that was so that the Japanese team could focus on making non-Sonic titles while someone else kept the franchise alive (it's also why so many SA2 levels look like San Fransisco).

I stand behind the game dev team though, because if I was going back to Adventure I'd have to make the worlds 2 times bigger and I'd need more time to develop more ideas on how to make Modern able to venture pretty much everywhere in 3D space without reducing his velocity.

He shouldn't come to a dead stop, but his speed doesn't have to be consistent. Plus when they make a game like Unleashed, that's still a big world: the justification for the Werehog was that they had to pad out the game, because Sonic's Day levels took up too much space to make more of, but they didn't last long enough to justify a full game.

In fact since the first Greenhill Zone it's always been very basic and easy to speed through, maybe the exploration get's more major for Modern in later levels? I think it'd be best to wait and see another Modern Zone before we start finding faults.

Maybe. If nothing else I hope levels like Speed Highway (probable) and City Escape (pretty much confirmed via news of the remix) don't have any less freedom than they originally did.

...Except maybe during the Truck sequence. That was funny for being off-the-wall and ridiculous, but you shouldn't be expected to navigate obstacles you can't even see ahead of you.

I don't think its that really. Its more that Modern Sonic aka Unleashed daytime Sonic levels are always set on a linear path with maybe a few insignificant split offs. You don't really have the freedom to go to specific areas with that kind of gameplay. The engine isn't even designed to let you do that as you can tell by playing either Unleashed or Colors. Sure you can TRY to run around like that, but it feels clunky and the level design is constantly forcing you forward rather than letting the player set their own pace and move around when they want, where they want to go.

Unless they drastically change the way Modern Sonic handles, I doubt we'll have the freedom to roam around like you could in SA1 either.

I'm not saying Generations Modern is like Adventure they aren't the same thing at all.

But do you honestly see them releasing Generations by the end of the year if they're going to make a complete exploration experience? Besides doesn't Modern Sonic offset your hunger for exploration? Plus "your own pace"? Shouldn't you be going....Sonics' pace...?

No I don't seem them doing that, but then I don't see the Sonic Team of today taking the time to do that in general. And its not that I was ever looking for exploration, but DC-GC era Sonic gave a lot more of a choice aside from grinding on how you wanted to move about a level. You can't just stop and go down side paths or move around the game like its actually platformer with the current Sonic. SA and SA2 as well as even Heroes, Shadow, and 06 gave you this option even if it was more prevalent in Heroes and SA than anything else.

For whatever reason, I just liked the feel of roaming around in those games a lot more as opposed to in the new games where all that I'm usually allowed to do strafe left and right while on a set path. Yeah, Unleashed had the overworlds where you could do that a little, but not only was there little to do in those, but it felt unnatural to be moving around in those with the Unleashed engine aside from with the Werehog which just wasn't fun to play in general.

As for moving at Sonic's pace, the player controls Sonic it shouldn't be the other way around. Then it may as well be a movie. Sure there's always been somewhat scripted parts in the games where the player was forced to keep going, but from the beginning you could always choose to go back and say "hey, that looks like it might be a secret path, lets check there" or "hmm, maybe if I go this way I can get to that path up there". Modern Sonic gives you these on occasion, but the deviations are so insignificant or forceful that its hard to enjoy them really since the game still feels like it is, sometimes more literally than others, on rails. I suppose that's just what Sonic has become now, but forgive me if I find that disappointing having played nearly every major Sonic game up until Unleashed. The degradation of the series over the last 5-6 years or so has been somewhat depressing to me.

You don't see Sonic Team of today doing what they use to do because most of those people aren't even doing Sonic games anymore, right? Look, I understand the flaws I'm not looking at this with Sonic Cycle Syndrome. I openly admit Sonic 06 is terrible and even though I played Heroes I only enjoyed it cause I thought it was kinda cool to play as three different characters at any given time. Unleashed was a breath of Fresh air, except the Werehog levels dragged on too long. Colors was as close as were getting to perfection and I don't have much to complain about Sonic 4. Generations, isn't even in my hands yet, and like 4 I'm reserving myself to be positive. Besides Sonic Rush has been supplementing my 2d needs for awhile now. No one sane can pretend Sonics been kicking ass like he used to, but times are changing and there is no immediate answer to a game that in my uneducated completely jaded by fan's and the common persons complaints alike should JUST stay 2D. If you aren't going to do it Adventure style then it's not worth trying to do. Though I can't pretend that Generations looks like everyone is getting appeased.

THIS. Hell, it doesn't even need to be a Sonic game, but the Chao garden was amazing. Why they didn't do a spinoff of it or include it in any game after SADX is beyond me.

SA2's Garden was the best. Make a new one or bring it back.

I wonder if they took out the chao garden because a majority of the sonic fans didn't use it.

Regardless it would be nice to have it back.

To be honest I didn't care much for the Chao Garden and I think the biggest part of the reason you all agree, is because your all A. in a Nintendo Forum subset to ahem....POKEMON. Or B. Finding breeding little creatures is a fun thing to do. They even get stats! You can take them to other peoples games and race and fight with them like some sort of Rancher...kinda like a Digital Monster, or maybe I'm thinking of some of Metaphysical Robots? Meh.

Uh
you do realize that the reason there's a pokemon subforum is because there are a shitload of pokemon topics which would completely overrun the rest of the gaming forum if not separated, right?

I don't know what you have against pokemon but its not like "durrhp unfair videogame bias" or whatever you're making it out to be

News flash: people actually like the chao garden
deal with it

i knew too many people that liked the chao garden.

and this is coming from someone who DIDN'T play SA.
