Organizing TUGS
Don't have anything on this computer I'm on, maybe some other time or when I do something.
Thanked by:
I'll only be insulted if there is no GOD tier
since that is where I belong

I belong to either beginner or intermediate bracket but I would be honored to face Elk or BAB in the 1st round. The thing is, when the titans are clashing, you don't even get to compete if you're in another bracket.

Btw there's really no point to make that intermediate bracket.

It doesn't sound long, but that's about four days per round, and a day to judge and organize the forums per round!

N-no. That's too short. Last time around we needed a week per round; and it showed.

And for what it's worth, having tiers isn't particularly insulting. I want to participate, and compete against other people of my own skill level. It means that I'd be more likely to go for multiple rounds. Being paired against a pro would mean I get to play for one round, and it wouldn't be as much fun because I'd be horribly outstripped, and they'd be bored with who they're up against.

If you're scared of high-level players going out early, have the judges score a group of entries based on points, and the person with the lowest points is dropped. If you're only rooting for two people (which is kinda dickish, but whatever); then they technically can't 'lose to a nobody'.

Edit: So we have 3 groups of 25, and I don't know how many rounds - with each round knocking out 1-5 people. Or shit, why not ditch the idea of knockouts entirely, and have a consistent tally through all rounds, witrh the highest score in each bracket being the winner. That method in fact guarantees that high-level or rival entrants will be competing; and that the tournament will finish unless every single entrant drops out.

i say go for tiers.
it doesn't matter if a beginner COULD possibly maybe beat an expert.
what matters is if they DO.

so if that guy with potential is taken out the first round, tough luck, hope they do better next time.

better than going against someone way out of your league and then giving up entirely.

That actually sounds like a good idea.

i feel like everyone just ignored the part of my post where i said ADD A LOSER'S BRACKET AFTER GETTING RID OF EXPERT/INTERMEDIATE/BEGINNER so that even if you're eliminated first round you can still

you know
keep going

I say I have another suggestion for how TUGS could work.

A preliminary round determines how good you are. Ok, so no difference there.
I suggest I give the preliminary round should be done between the deadline for signing up and the beginning of TUGS.
You will then be ranked in a list of duels- the more experienced spriters go at the top, the less experienced at the bottom.
If you win your duel, you'll go up in the list. If you lose your duel, you go down and you'll have to wait the following round to sprite.
Nobody is eliminated.
The winner is the highest person on the list at the end of the tournament.

As for the amount of time TUGS lasts: I could make it start the 15th of July and finish the 17th of August? This gives us about a month. I think I'll be busy before the 15th of July, I'll have to talk about it with my parents. Please tell me when I can fit this in. :/

Oh, and I plan on finishing TUGS.

That's perfect!

I was thinking 4 rounds wasn't going to be enough in these circumstances.
6 is pushing it, because that'd make 6 weeks of TUGS.
5 sounds like a good compromise. But as I said, I need an idea of when I can fit that in.

That's not really where my complaint lies, moreover that I'd rather play against people of my own skill level. A Losers Bracket only sort of diminishes that - there's not really anything stopping two mismatched-skill parings in a row. And to be honest, since there's a lot of hype surrounding the high-end pixelartists going against each other, then why not cut out the middle man and already have them pre-grouped? :V Because let's face it, bearing in mind the way online art critique tends to function, a system where entrants are fellated and/or condemned based entirely on the quality of submission is pretty much exactly what the people want. In a worst case scenario, the borderline people who straddle between skill groups get to be big fish in small ponds.

I do also like different brackets getting different challenges. Means there's a wider scope of skills being tested and more varied result. 65 entries of the same topic sounds a little boring, even if the entries vary in quality.

I have an idea.

How about we re-introduce brackets as follows:
x number of duels does one thing, x number of duels another, etc.

what was wrong with the old way of doing things?

I agree. What's wrong with the beginner, intermediate, and expert system, again?

Being paired up randomly only with people of your own skill level is the most logicak choice.
