Watched Monster's University today. I still like the previous movie more but I liked this one pretty well.

Well for one thing, according to MU they met in College, but in the original, it's stated they knew each other since elementary school.

Honestly, College isn't too different than Elementary School. Everyone runs around like children and acts like they're invincible because mommy and daddy aren't around and they're all looking for social acceptance in one form or another.

Anyway, I just watched "This is The End" again with some friends who hadn't seen it. I still find it funny, I know many didn't. But something about the charm of the absurdity just gets me.

I understand some people love it, but I just felt uncomfortable because it seemed like they went out of their way to use profanities, which is just silly to me. I know it's supposed to be a very stupid movie by design, but it's just not my kind of humor.

No I agree they used profane language just for the sake of using profane language and that doesn't really add anything to it. Some of the jokes were way too forced like "Take Yo Panties Off", the "Rape Suggestion" scene was gross in my opinion. Most of the forced jokes weren't all that funny, it was more how fluent and absurd conversations that got me. LIke the "Playboy Scene", yes it was a forced joke, but they just went so well with it and acted so stupidly and were so convincing that it just seemed like a real conversation between two idiots and gave the movie a more human feel that I just broke down laughing. Same goes for the "Water Scene" and everything having to do with Michael Cera. I agree the movie wasn't funny as a whole, and the ending was just dumb as hell but it's worth a watch to anyone who hasn't scene it simply for it's few golden scenes.

Saw Pacific Rim yesterday and was very disappointed. The trailers wouldn't have had you guess that the movie sets itself up to be Neon Genesis Evangelion meets Gurren Lagann meets Godzilla. This is what ultimately makes the movie so incredibly disappointing - it establishes a premise that would allow for significant psychological insight into the character, and, subsequently, lots and lots of meaningful character development, and then fails to follow through. Unfortunately, all of the characters are flat and static and delegate themselves to stereotypes and tropes. This makes every single waking moment the movie uses to explore these characters incredibly painful and boring to watch. That is not to say they do not have their moments, though - there are a few interesting scenes that demonstrate the chemistry between said characters, or make some characters more interesting, it's just that, despite the effort, none of them are memorable.

The Kaiju and Robot designs were also really disappointing. The robot designs are clunky and top heavy, and the features that distinguish them are non too attractive (imo). The Kaiju were just incredibly boring. For a movie that's supposed to be inspired by Godzilla and Neon Genesis Evangelion, they just...lacked color. And features. Even the worst looking Godzilla Kaiju were colorful with distinguishing appendages and had unique attacks and special powers. Only 1 Kaiju in the entire movie actually displays something resembling a special ability and he's promptly killed after the red shirts are decimated. Artistically, it's just, so flipping plain. That was probably the worst part of the movie - the only reason you'll remember any one of those monsters is because they make an allusion to classic Godzilla Kaiju, not because they actually had any memorable color schemes, abilities, or designs. It's more like "this thing grew wings and looks like Rodan now".

HOWEVER the movie was still cool action wise. The actions scenes (while some of them could have been better) were well directed and easy to read (most of the time). There isn't much to say about them - it's a giant robot action movie. Of course the action scenes are going to be amazing. Still, though, I feel like they can't compare to the animes it drew inspiration from - Gurren Lagann, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Gundam and even classical Godzilla battle scenes are so much more dynamic, inspired, and innovative, I'm just used to something that is so much...more.

This movie will appeal to Godzilla fans more than it will Mecha Anime fans, imo. And I'm both.

I just saw Pacific Rim last night. Cliches? Abundant! Substance? Almost absent!

However, after being disappointed by movies like Man of Steel and Star Trek: Into Darkness, I needed something that didn't try to make a multi-layered experience out of a rather straightforward premise: the villains aren't made to be sympathetic to any degree, you don't get some overlying message/metaphor/modern commentary (at least not heavy-handed); you get mechs beating the fuck out of monsters, just as it says on the can. By God, it was satisfying for me.
