Oh wow. I really can't accept the complements on the palette though; I didnt design it myself because I wanted to make up for not participating in that really old Pixeljoint weekly challenge about making an underwater mockup.

In fact, I strongly agree with the diagnosis that my entry's pretty much the least advanced in terms of technique; I figure I only made it because of completion and the amount of work I put in. Hard work beats talent if talent doesn't work hard, eh? Tongue

I've added Jeremy's C+C to the first post.

Drazelic: well, yours looks most like a game mockup, iirc.

First off, I enjoy Jeremy as a pixel artist. However, I feel the critique on my piece focused too heavily on the colors and not on the execution of the techniques. I suppose it goes to show that color and contrast make all the difference.

Fair point. I didn't really know what else to say; your pixelling skills are solid.

(A quick brightness contrast adjustment, has its own issues in lighter tones, but I think it shows my point better than explaining with words).

Hm, I'm in seventh for this ranking. I can easily see that mine was pretty gradient-tastic, I was kinda stuck on shading some areas (LOOKING AT THAT TAIL FIN GRR) and actually didn't know how to execute the darker shades without there being some gradient effect going on (unless I used fewer shades?). Had a bit of a trial making everything look right. Otherwise I'm glad you like the face and a Milotic was the best idea I had at the time (I'm not very creative these days...). Tongue

hoorah! i'm the biggest fish in the puddle!

i totally get what you mean about the (lack of)shading on the near fins jeremy
i mentioned it myself in the wip thread but didn't have quite enough time to improve it

Acknowledged. I think I'll try more saturated colors for the next round and see how things go.

Great! I love criticism. I agree with pretty much all the comments st0ven and Jeremy gave.

I usually do not use lines to determine everything, but I was basing the look out of an Earthbound enemy style, in which lines were used a lot to define parts of the character. Just felt like I had to explain my intent on that particular point that was raised in Jeremy's crit. I'm sure I could've refined it more had I not gotten lazy/had to leave for a trip. :]

Thanks for both of your comment, it will serve me well on my journey of pixel work and spriting.

I really appreciate the criticism. I think I tend to try to over detail things, and it ends up making things look sloppy or unreadable. I'll keep simplicity in mind for the future.

Also, I agree with the color issues. I was contemplating changing the blue color after I finished shading, but decided against it. I'm learning a lot about using good colors together already. Hopefully, I will be able to expand my comfort zone when it comes to palettes.
