My First Sprites[Feedback Wanted]

Hi Everyone,


I am currently trying to develop my spriting talent for a game project I will be working on later. These represent my first foray at spriting.

I guess they are what one would call FF-styleQuestion

Criticism, constructive and otherwise, is welcome.

If these are what you call Final Fantasy style then they're pretty far from it if not even at all to be blunt.

take a gander at the following links for some references:
final fantasy 4
final fantasy 5
final fantasy 6

Take a look at how they're made, you wouldn't see the characters having their arms all over the place nor would they be holding weapons, at all, also there might be slightly more contrast then what you're current sprites have.

You might want to consider restarting them, but there could be improvements granted you're willing to improve. as some heads up I'd stop zomming in on the sprites and stop trying to crop them like that.

Some very blatant problems I see are the colors. You're trying to jam in a whole lot of colors into a small area, and the colors have very poor contrast between them; you might as well just scrap the extra colors and keep them solid shades (like with the two darker grays on the knight and the two dark tones on the clothes and skin on the soldier). Actually, with sprites that small, you probably don't even need more than two shades per color to get a nice effect.

The dog's probably the best out of the group, and I love the pose on it. Everything else has some problems, though; for the book, try to visualize a 3D rectangular prism instead of keeping it a complete rectangle. The knight's just a solid mass of iron; split up his features, and fix those shoulders (the solid black shoulder guards don't work with that thing). The soldier's pretty nice-looking, but see if you can't make the arms longer. I'd excuse the heightened belt, but you really need to fix how you're coloring the clothes since they're just a garbled mess right now (especially the pants). Diogalesu up there linked to the Final Fantasy sprites, and they're all really good for showing how sprites this small should be shaded.

i'm not that familiar with FinalFantasy but i've just had a look at some of the sprites and your sprites aren't really in style. All these sprites are very messy and have a number of unnecessary pixels


there are quite a few anatomy issues, even with the book...
they've all got stubs for arms and legs
the perspective of the book is odd, you've made the back page larger than the front which isn't realistic. The back page should be the same size or smaller than the front if you're going for oblique or perspective, respectively
the character's heads are wider than their torsos which is unrealistic and not a stylistic element of FF either

you should look up human and canine anatomy and use some references to help you fix what you've done so far

the outlining is puzzling at the moment because it's on and off here and there for no apparent reason

another issue is that the poses aren't very exciting, i'm not sure if you're making an overworld or battle sprite but if they're battle sprites, they could be more energetic and have more character

I'll keep practicing for a few more days and try to get that hang of it before I post anything else.

It is obviously that in retrospect it was a gross mischaracterization to describe the sprites as FF-style. I believe I meant something else, lol.

Alright, I've been doing some more practice. I think these, all in all, at least turned out better than the last batch. Had four, but one was corrupted somehow.

you should really consider reading some basic tutorials about how lighting and shading works, among other things.

i particulary reccomend you this one wich is not really long, is well detailed and has a nice amount of exercises you can follow to practice as you read.
