My GCN games have recently been having some massive slow downs and lock-ups that were never there before, and it's more frequent in the older games like Luigi's Mansion. They really aren't in that bad of a shape. Is anybody else having any problem with their old GCN games? Are the discs just old and cranky and calling it quits?

i've been playing gamecube loads recently and everything's fine
mario sunshine's fine
f-zero gx is fine
wind waker's fine
viewtiful joe is fine
everything's fine
not sure why there would be a universal slow-down of gamecube games, it's probably your console?
My GC's several years old and it has no problems (of course I play my Wii now but last I played it it was fine), maybe yours is really old and is starting to wear out?
My first indigo one went bad on me (I don't recall how it was bad though) so my cousin lent me his old black one, then I later got a platinum one.

I too have a problem with my gamecube games, though not the same.
My Wii (had 2 GCs before years ago, both died) doesn't read Brawl at all and when I play Sonic Adventure DX or Melee (not sure if the same goes for my other GC games), when loading a section there is a risk an error pops up and the disk stops spinning. Also, when a disk is spinning in my Wii it makes a terrible noise, so I doubt its the lens.
Getting a little on the subject, I have never experienced slowdowns.

Maybe the game discs got scratched up? I wouldn't know. The only troubles I've had are dusty memory cards.

Well yeah, are you playing them on the GCN, or the Wii?
I haven't tried playing mine on the GCN recently but they work perfectly on the Wii.

I'm using the Wii.
I was worried the disc were just beginning to fade, like old CDs and DVDs will. Guess not, though, if nobody else is having trouble :-/

Well I haven't had trouble with my games either the last time I used my Wii, but I mostly emulate those now for convenience.
I wouldn't worry too much about CD's fading though. I still have a lot of old CD's from my parents' old 1998 or so Computer with games and such loaded on. God knows I don't use them at this point since most of them were young young children's games, but the ones that aren't scratched still work fine.
If you are playing them on the Wii listen to the Wii, make sure the fan works.

There's one thing I know about the Wii is that it is very susceptible to dust and smoke.

The area I kept my Wii was very dusty, now it malfunctions from time to time.

I found that unplugging it and letting it cool down for a while makes it run a little better.

If you get disc read errors, then it's definitely the disc being scratched.
And trust me on this. I've had to go through 3 different Super Monkey Ball 2 discs before finding a working one. Depending on the scratches, the disc will either;
A) Not work at all
B) Work for a few minutes with or without errors, then DRE
C) Work perfectly with no issues
What other games specifically are you noticing slowdown? Some games have a natural slowdown believe it or not.
I might as well add that the problem that Kriven was having was fixed. His Wii was the issue.
