They like to use threats like a war on terror, or in this case online piracy to be the big enemy they have to fight against, so they can use it as an excuse to take away your liberties. I wouldn't have gone to such a degree if I wasn't sick of everything else I have to put up with from his end. You only see this one story. I have a lot of other stuff. I'm a douchebag, sure, I guess. Also, get the protests over with? That's not quite how it works. The protests against SOPA will end when SOPA and its kin are dead in the water. In the meantime, you might not be able to read Wikipedia for a day. I'd take that over having the entire internet censored, because one is a mild inconvenience and one just straight-up changes the internet.
