So what is that exactly? I've got a few reps saying that it annoys some people while I'm actually now aware of what I do wrong.... Could someone help me out here?

It comes from the term "Back-seat driver", which refers to a passenger in a car that repeatedly tells the driver what to do, as if they were the driver themself.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back-seat_driver "Backseat modding", I guess, would refer to either telling mods what to do (i.e. telling mods how to do their job), or acting like a mod without actually being one. There may be a fine line between what people would perceive as being helpful, and what might come off as 'backseat modding'. Thanked by: Gaia

Could someone help me out here? It means telling (or helping) a mod to do something or helping a mod decide what to do when a mod doesn't need any help. It can also me being a sitch in some situations. A trait that isn't present on your end:/. Taking into account the words of the post directly before me... And your reputation, people usually say this when they are bending the rules a bit. You're doing the right thing.

Backseat modding is pretty much telling the mods that they should do _____ or something among the lines of how they should handle a situation.
It's not usually acceptable and for the most part you'll come off as annoying if you do it. Not just to the mods but the people around you. It's better if you don't do it unless there is someone who is being a complete ass and has no regard for the rules what so ever.
Ah, so that's the term I should use. There's some guy in another forum who's acting like a mod all the time, telling us what we should do, shouldn't do, and saying that we suck at our job just because it isn't how he'd do it.
By the way, when I read this thread I thought it was referring to modding as in game modifying

And in most fourms, backseat modding will net you a warn as it gets generally irritating.
