Bombshell93's sprite sketchbook
#16
another new try, I tried a different approach with the others I was trying from scratch but I looked at some stuff about other peoples work flows and decided to give the Skelle > Flesh out > clean up a try.

EDIT: this seems to be a good working flow because with it I can get better results in higher resolution sprites, which is important where more detail is desired. (as is needed with most of my character designs.)
EDIT EDIT: heres another using the same method, I'm sure I've probably screwed something up and I'm hoping somoene will be kind enough to tell me, but I'm liking the results I'm getting from doing this.

another few tries I'm getting the hang of this to the point where each one can take me seconds. please if I'm going wrong somewhere let me know, I'll probably start spriting like this regularly, its quick, good quality (from what I can tell) and allows me to sprite in bigger resolutions.

I did these quick figure sketches and basicly traced the sprites over them

The feet in these sprites are very unusually shaped. Kinda lumpy and floppy.

how do they look in the sketches? (expand the spoiler)
I kind of get what you mean in the sprites, the first looks like he's wearing socks, the second looks very curvy, and the last one has abnormal ankles on the one foot and very floppy toes.
I'm thinking its probably a problem with the sprites but if you can see the issue in the sketches I'll know to learn anatomy of the foot.

okay I'll be going back to figure study spriting after this, I just decided to make myself an avatar out of one of my oldest personal characters, INK.
The character is a possessed burlap sack with teeth of steel and a heart of fire. A trouble maker barely a foot high, loves to drink flamables and spit out the flames as well as dissembling anything engineered.
anyway your not here to hear about my character your here to see it! BAM!

another sprite in a similar style to my avatar, I'm very much enjoying working on bigger sprites, I'm able to get everything looking cleaner.
This animation still needs some work but the sprite itself I'm happy with.

he's slightly off-balanced Smile but i love it

thanks could you elaborate on how hes off balance so I could fix it Smile
also I'm having a bit of trouble with the head when its turned... I keep making it look like an afro when its not! XD I'm just doing the 4 base frames for a run animation. (on left, kick right, on right, kick left)
I'm probably making proportion mistakes when turning the head (I know the heads huge as is)
EDIT: woops uploaded wrong sheet version

It looks like his upper body in general shrinks down in that turning/running pose you're starting. I'd make it a bit bigger before going on.

thanks for that I thought something was odd but it just passed my mind, god knows when I'd have noticed that myself XD
[Image: NA2eR.png]
is this much better?

If you flip it horizontally you will definitely see that he's off-balanced. Move the upper body or whatever you need to, a few pixels back.

hmmm odd that its more apparent when he faces the right.
anyway I fixed it for the most part, hes still a little off balance but definitely not as much,
[Image: utensils_revenge_idle_by_pushbombshell-d51ri54.gif]
better?

okay I tweaked the idle animation
[Image: utensils_revenge_idle_by_pushbombshell-d51ri54.gif]
and I've got the high and low frames for the run animation, their a bit off I think but I cant put my finger on it.

any and all help is appreciated.

people do not normally run with the same side arm and leg out front. when the left leg is outstretched, the right arm is up, and vice versa; it helps keep balance while walking/running.

move his legs for the idle. it looks unnatural for him to make his body move while the legs are stiff as hell.

the running animation should use some in-between frames for a sprite like this.
