123D Catch Creations

hey guys, this is sort of an old application that's come out in the last year or so. I tried doing this with simular programs in the past, but they've always been overly complicated.

Basically with Catch, you can transform a series of 2D photos into a fully 3D model with textures intact!

I tried this using simple objects, to more complex objects. Here is an example of a N64 rumble pack created from a series of 40 photos from various angles

Catch is currently FREE, but only as a beta. Unfortunately for now you can't "download" catch, but rather upload your photos to their server. The server will then resend your scene to you when it is done processing.

The problem with this is obviously it may take a VERY long time to upload/download your content depending on your connection speed and the load on their server. Another bummer is that the quality is purposely downgraded in the beta, as indicated by the site staff.

Keep in mind that MORE photos means more accurate or better reconstructed 3D objects. But more photos will also result in longer WAITING time. The rumble pack was made out of only 40 images, and maybe took 15-20mins to process. As the anime figures were almost 300 images and took over 2hours to reconstruct as a model.

Anyways, if your interested in trying 123D Catch, please share your experiences and creations here. it would be cool seeing what others were able to recreate in 3D !! Big Grin

PS. If your further interested in alternative 3D scanning methods, I'm currently researching a laser method. which is free and relatively cheap. It only requires a PC, Camera, and Laser pointer. The crappy part is that the program created for this disables the ability to scan textured models. That is however until you pay that $1000 dollars (USD) to unlock that darn feature! lol
Anyway the model quality is 100x better over that created in 123D Catch. Find more on that and supplies here @: http://www.david-laserscanner.com/

have fun!

This seems fun, however I think the only way you will get something good out of it is to have your camera and model suspended properly so that you can get the different angles without variances in camera distance from object. So seems like something only for the professional marketplace who have the equipment.

no I am aware of that, I'm just making reference to the fact that, that is about all the average person can do, is hold up a camera and take shots. Big Grin Though a cheap way to do it would be to get a sheet for a solid background and a lazy Suzann to put the object on and a tripod to hold the camera. 8D might work almost as good.

Ooh, this sounds awesome! I'd love to try this out. Too bad I don't really have anything to test it on...

Only few models are in a 3d viewer most of them are simple .gif pictures or .swf files which not contain any 3d model. I saw the few of them in the 3dviewer and i thinkthat are useless meshes, because they are too high poly and too low detailed.

Sorry for commenting on this page and breaking a rule i just thought everyone should know about this, i found a website that does this stuff for free for you here is the link

http://www.hypr3d.com/ and not only will it do pictures on this site it will turn your video scenes as well into a full 3D model

Unfortunately you have to sign up to be able to do so,

also you can store up to 1 GB of free storage, then any higher and you buy their premium package,

If you want to know more here is the FAQ link

http://www.hypr3d.com/FAQ

(this means we might be able to even rip cut-scenes that are Pre-rendered in games)
What Rips am i doing next not sure?
