Well it's called the "cool" factor. It sells 'cause it looks "cool", the character is "cool", and friends tell you its "cool".
This is why I think I'm so alone with DKC, it's not "cool" enough maybe?

well
fuck
only thing I'd be content about is if this is the case, then they don't do anything with the 1999 events. Save that for Koji if he ever comes back

Uh, DKC has Diddy...and Candy...and Funky, obvious attempts at being cool and "with it" (at that time), the OST is also called DK Jamz. DK with a Boom Box replacing "old" Cranky at the beggining. Also DK Rap (on 64).
Not a jab at it or anything, I love DKC, I really do, but if there's any series that really tried to be "cool" (except Sonic, ugh), is the DKC series.

True. I suppose it's 90's cool. But I think it's more humorous than really trying to be cool.
Anyway, I'm saying there aren't many fan groups around today except for the one I belong to. Unlike Sonic which is everywhere.
I think it might have to do with the fact that apes aren't as popular as foxes, wolfs, cats, and other furry fodder.
Maybe i should be thankful that DK isn't that popular!

god of war
and thats barely touching the surface, really
which is ironic because neither game has anything beyond a "pretty" surface
We shall agree to disagree there. Yes it's shallow as hell but playing as an angry man and killing things is fun. I don't need every game I play to be deep. It's like Asura's Wrath - your going to love it or hate it.
As for DKC, I always saw it as humourus over cool. I mean I doubt Rare actually thought the DK rap was cool. The Wii one was great, but I never expected it to become a franchise so no sequel wouldn't disapoint me.
Hey, I still need to play a DKC game. Any recommendations (although I'll probably play the first anyway)?

I'm not sure how well the older ones have aged. As much as I loved the original DKC, the second one is probably the better game when played today. Personally I wouldn't bother with the third one - though that might just be me hating Kiddy Kong and being full of rage at the time of it's release as DK was unplayable (like seriously why is DK only the main guy in a single DKC game in the original trilogy?)
But well, if you have a Wii - play the Wii one first. I find looking back at a game series is always more enjoyable once you've played the latest one. So DKC: Returns and then 1, 2 and 3. It's not like there's a great amount to choose from. Jungle Beat is also worth checking out if you can find a pair of Bongos.
I haven't got a Wii, so I'll probably just play the ones I can. If there isn't much story I'll play 2 first, but otherwise I'd like to follow any plot that links between games.

The only real story in DKC2 is that DK takes the role of the damsel in distress. Nothing special.

DKC2, primarily because it has the better gameplay of the three original ones.

I think DKC3 has the most polished gameplay but people generally hate it because of the characters.

The level settings aren't as fun and the music, while good, kinda falls short comparing the two other games. It's a good game, but DKC2 is the better one overall.

I'm obliged to disagree there.
DCK2 was better in terms of gameplay because it took the original DKC and actually made it into something better and challenging at the same time. DKC3 was almost like a step down.

DKC2 also scared the shit out of me when I was younger. Haunted Hall still kind of gives me nightmares

DKC3 certainly lacks in music, presentation, and layout. But it's mechanics were improved, barrel throwing was a little more accurate than the previous two, and jump control was slightly more fluid.
Like I said, the mechanics were more polished. But that doesn't make it a better game I suppose.
