at the risk of sounding like a fanboy i'm going to say that doom 3 is the only game ever who genuinely causes tension on you. not the tension as the fellow poster mentioned arriba as in "shit coming out of the closet", but genuinely as in it builds tension and it keeps constant, from the very start when shit hits the fan, to the very last battle(ignoring the anticlimatic last battle, though). said tension is what, even when you can tear apart imps and almost whatever came in front of me by the very last moments of the game(i found myself bullying a mancubus with the shutgun for the fun of it) the whole atmosphera and the clausthrophobia these corridos cause on the player is almost unique.
it doesnt matter if you're aware that you know you walked thru that corridor and cheked every corner, or that you're good with the shotgun. there is still that point in wich you can be ambushed and miss that momentum when the imp gets too close. even when the game eventually teachs you that you're surrounded and things can literally spawn out of nowhere, you can still find yourself being cautious, taking out your light every so often to check a corner in search for ammo or those scarce supplies -even when you know that is a trap-.
it builds suspense, and makes you overly tense to a point there are segments where you can feel the fear of taking a certain step or opening a particular door. and its a feeling that goes across the game, almost from the very start to the very end.
other games have taken the "horror" "genre" and literally do whatever people thinks is scary nowdays -wich usually leads to shock and disgust like in dead space.

Really? It came to the point where I was like "Looks like an Imp is going to come out from under those stairs..." Imp comes out, shotgun it, "Yep, it did." for me.
I think Doom 3 is a cracking game ( hell I played it with all the lights off and everything because that's how I roll) but apart from a few moments of being made jump, as soon as you make any amount of progress the game was so readable. I've always seen Doom 3 as a "Shit coming out the closet" kinda of horror game I'm afraid to say. Resi 4 does a much better job (damn those cows at the start freak me out) in my own opinion and I've never even completed that game (I suck balls at it, like terribly).

I would like to say Resident Evil The Gamecube version was Freaking terrifying depending on which difficulty you played easy, normal, or hard, there would be more zombies/monsters around each corner, also add the fact you only had a limited amount of times you could save as well as limited ammo limited health packs, made that game much more suspenseful than resident evil 4.

Funny thing is yesterday I was trying to find this gif of Slenderman on google, one where he is standing outside a window waving his arms around. I can only find jpg images though :/
Speaking of RE4, the only part that scared me was when you hear the chainsaw... that freaking potato bag head! Dr something? I can't remember his name, but on the merc mode it was like an adrenaline rush trying to run away from the noise of the chainsaw. It's bad enough he kills you in one swipe.

Why am I only allowed to thank this once?

Thank you. Nothing like seeing an apparently normal person get shot in the face, stumble, swear, pick up his pitchfork, and keep on truckin' like a boss. Beats a lump of flesh shouting YEARGHIBLE at every turn.
Bit of advice on RE4, by the way: run around to corral people, then treat it like a bullet hell shooter while they're on their way to you.
Also, Dead Space got mentioned at some point, so I guess I should point out that I consider the Dead Space games truer sequels to the Doom titles than Doom 3. Strong emphasis on mobility and not getting chunks taken out of you.

Doom 3 is nothing like the first Dooms (so on that we agree). But I wouldn't say Dead Space was anything like the old Dooms which were more like "Hell yeah lets kill shit to cool music" than "Arrghh spooky things!"
Then again my Doom playing days were with 3 other people and a lot of beer (back when terrible tasting canned beer was the best thing ever) so I probably missed a lot of what Doom was meant to be about. And when Doom 1 and 2 was on Doom 3 for the Xbox (which I brought regardless of owning it on the PC anyway) it was also played with 3 other people and a lot of beer.

I pointed out Dead Space because even though it technically isn't that close to the classic Dooms, it was still a good deal closer than Doom 3. There are closer ones, though, to be certain- the original Half-Life, the first Quake, the first Unreal, maybe Blood? I can probably think of more, but I'm not entirely sober, and I don't feel like it.
How many baddies did the Doomguy face down in your typical larger fights in Doom 3? Maybe four or five at a stretch, unless we're talking about the little Spidery motherfuckers (who I just punched, anyway). Dead Space likes throwing upwards of ten or so enemies at you, all of different varieties, requiring different tactics. Srsly, dat gymnasium fight. It's pretty much why I think Dead Space 3 is gonna be top-notch- it's always been at its best when it just drops trou and goes action-crazy.
I think the bit that really pisses me off about Doom 3 is that there were glimpses of the fast-action shooter it could easily have been. The Mancubus' introduction comes to mind.
Also, while everyone's talking horror: System Shock 2. Play it.

Parsec Productions has done it again. However, I'm sorry about the game review on Toonami; the second game to get an unknown rating.
