Why We Sprite?
#16
Mutsukki's right on. I'm straight with critique but I'm kind about it. I try to explain what the problem is and how they can fix it and try to give little motivational speeches when they feel like giving up, and when you do that it tells them that they aren't worthless, and that they can become great. Let them know that they can't give up or else they'll never get to the place where they want to be.

As for why I sprite... I dunno how I discovered it or why I decided to start doing it, it's been too long, but like Gors I do it because it's fun, it's a wonderful form of artistic talent and every day I envision making these amazing pieces of art in my mind, things that I would like to create, but I don't yet have the skill or experience to make them reality. That's why I'm trying to get better. I want to be rid of my spriting difficulties, make nice sprites that I can be proud of, and someday, submit sprites of my favorite video game characters to TSR. That's a dream of mine and I'm going to keep working hard towards my goal and not give up.

I like to hear that there is actually someone who wants to have their sheets on the custom section.

You know perhaps we should split the Spriting and Pixel Art board? One for people who want to make functional sheets for tSR, and one for people who want to be serious pixelartists.

Tags could work, that's my two-cents.

I'm not sure if adding two sub-sections would help much since then you'd have to have a sub section for spriting projects in each of those child-boards and then you'd have to go through all of the topcs and sort them(Thats going to be a Nightmare).

Mutsukki's pretty dead-on the money. As far as Nayr goes, I think that case really boils down to if we want him to improve his art, or him to improve as an artist, and I'm not really sure which goal tSR should pursue.

As far as C+C goes, I figure telling them the good things on their sprites, in addition to the bad, would be a happy medium. For example, telling them that their shading is good, in addition to their linework being godawful, would be both helpful and give off a feeling of brutal honesty instead of pointless dickishness. Besides, I don't think it'd be too bad considering you're already going through the effort of analyzing everything about their sprite.

Also, since this post and the last couple ones are probably more in line with this topic, uh

I sprite because I wanted to contribute to a project. And then after that got really boring, I just kept doing it because I... needed a hobby?

Hey wanna see what sparked my interest in spriting?

This shit:

http://cnn.captainn.net/index.html

I was like "Wow look how useful these sprite things are! They can be used to make easy comics, funny videos, even games!"

Originally I started making crappy comics but I wasn't happy with how they looked. A lot of the sprites were mismatched and I couldn't find the certain sprites I needed. Joining the Captain N forums (where I met Bacon) I learned that if people didn't have the sprites they needed, they would make their own... "WHOA! MAKE your own sprites?"

So I did! My comics started to look better and I actually had fun making my own sprites. When I saw there were people who submitted their work to Ninsprites I was very eager to do the same. I made an Ice Climber sheet. It was accepted and you know what happened?

Someone used them! They used them in a crappy comic... but I was happy.

This would be my answer to why I bother scratching somethings where edits would not only be faster and easier, but acceptible.

Anyways, I sprite for a lot of reasons. For fun is almost always a partial reason, but I'd eventually like to do something more with it. I tend to sprite for some other use, and rarely make a sprite I don't intend to use for something else (even in competition, I'll attempt to make something I can use elsewhere, or make something based on a idea I had earlier). "Stand alone" sprites are usually just designs for ideas I had that I don't quite have a place for yet (And I tend to find a place later)

And Nindo, that was nicely said. I might disagree with it partially, as I find the bulk of what "for fun" really means is, in fact, the soul improving nature of art, as well as part of the reasons for using it as a tool rather than something else. So I really just find what you said to be the explaination behind "I sprite for fun".
Still nice to see it articulated, since it tends to stay unconsious and unsaid, just behind the what is spoken.
