I think Flannel and I are the only ones who see new Dante as a much more realistic Dante than anyone else. Perhaps it's the friends we've had or because we appreciate the anime roots Dante's original design comes from but realize he's been unrealistic from onset or perhaps it's the fact we just acknowledged young punk behavioral heroes. Whatever the cask Nick it's not a bad thing to hate new Dante at all. Lots of people hate/hated Raiden and are buying Metal Gear Rising.

Anyway, have you guy PLAYED this demo 4 modes with like a 30 minute level with secret doors and stuff with trials inside? Also boss mode? This games gonna be so good. I like the depth of the combo system, and word on the virtual vine is stuff only get's deeper but I do not see how that's possible. In any case demo's good games probably going to be better, cheers to everyone who wrote this game off you'll be missing out. *Drinks*

Don't play Far Cry 3 never really got into the series. Unlike how you get into her, amirite?

No but seriously. If something isn't your cup of tea it's not your cup of tea. If people legitimately don't like DmC's story it doesn't put me at odds with the game. I like the game for what it is. I don't feel it's taken a step back it just turned right instead of left, some people in the car are pissed, but whatever we're going to White Castle doesn't matter how we get there. (Also I realize it's pretty cheezy to use Harold and Kumar as an analogy of video game series direction but if you've been paying attention I also don't hate the story of this game so you could be inclined to believe I have very poor taste, though I'd never admit that because that's subject to interpretation.)

Honestly? I've been looking around and more than just a few of the "good" reviews read/smell a bit like Capcom's fat stacks of cash in the reviewer's pocket.

I wonder if anyone's forcing themselves to enjoy this game to justify the internet arguments they made against fans of the old games who weren't happy with the direction this game was going? I hope not, that'd be sad.

With IGN, yeah I can see a big bag of money making those numbers go up. But EVERYWHERE? Including sites that refuse to have flights and accommodation paid for when previewing games etc? Seems like a bit of a stretch.

Also many games have had "I like where this is going" preview/first impressions and then getting a "well, crap" review. I know Jim Sterling has done this with games and then they go onto the "Most disappointing games" list which make for good entertainment so I doubt there is any "lets make this better then what I said it was going to be otherwise I'll look stupid" reviews. Epic Mickey is probably the most recent and famous case of this as from the concept art and idea it looked awesome - and then it was pretty bland. Duke Nukem Forever also comes to mind.

Also, most of the whole 'this isn't shit' arguments were made against fans hating it just because of the new Dante. And those type of fans (along with the Sonic fans who think every game is good and the legions of angry Sony fans we had around it's launch year but to a less extent now) are just never going to be happy. DMC 4 showed signs of getting stale. DMC 5 would have only been worse. Look at where Resident Evil is now. The series needed a reboot.

As for the game itself, in all honesty I didn't like the demo too much. But demos can be funny. Look at Dead Space, that demo was good awful but the game was just dandy. I'll probably pick it up when it's dirt cheap, so no - I'm not as excited for the game as I once was. But that doesn't mean I regret defending it against some of the stupidity people threw against it before they actually played it.

Not getting into a "Should we listen to reviewers" war (and attempting to not get annoyed) but when you find someone who seems to have the same opinion as yourself, then their opinions on other things you haven't played yet are normally a good guide. Of course following reviews blindly is dumb but well, when 40/50 people say it's crap, it's probably crap, and when 40/50 say it's good - chances are it's probably good.

Obviously it's all down to personal taste but it's a good place to start, specially with games where no demo is available. Same with movies. If Rotten Tomatoes gives something 4% then I'm not going to rush out to the cinema to watch it, but if it's on, let's say 80% and I'm interested in it then I'm more likely to go watch it. I could think it's utterly crap and think all the reviewers must have been high while watching it but it's still something to initially go on.

Or you could base it on individual assessments and reasoning that addresses the consensus, and why one might meaningful disagree with said consensus.

Honestly, most games are rubbish regardless of what the general consensus is on their quality and don't deserve the ranks they get. DmC falls under that.

Or you could make your own opinions while taking note of others. It's a bit much to assume all other reviews are just cash handed under the table gold star reviews for games that get good reviews. And DMC does not fall under that, at least to me.

The first sentence is, the second sentence is more towards Tellis. Really though I'm not trying to start a discussion here, I'm just giving my thought.

For me reviews are something to take a note of. Now I do read Game Informer, but that's it, and even if a game I don't like gets a high score I read through the review and the overview, and I see that it's a fair enough review most of the time.
Now what bugs me with reviews and this especially goes towards music reviews is that most magazines have a 1-10 scale, and bad is usually associated with a 5-6. 5 is dead center and 6 is above average, how is that bad? I wish that more reviewers who don't actually like something wouldn't be so afraid to attach 1-4 on stuff, because when I see 5 I see "nothing that changes the playing field but it's an average alright" and 6 I see "There are some interesting things here, more tweaking and it could be great" So I hate to see 5 and 6 out of 10 used as a bad score for media.

I'm not saying people can't like something. People can like bad things all they want. Whats important is understanding that something is bad or actually having an intelligent discussion about why a game - or any other kind of media! - might or might not be good!

good game design. this is a good game. is there something that happens that explicitly defines why at one point kat says "bullets wont affect it" but then bullets affect it, because i skipped/missed a lot of the stuff in between those two things happening

it's one of those things you'd have to hype a lot to make a big impact for beat em ups/hack n slash that's more positive
