Your work did pay off its level 100 now, however when a person who trained a level 100 Dragonite wants to battle you'd get destroyed.
It isn't pointless that some pokemon require more exp to train or are harder to find that's what adds to their uniqueness.
If every pokemon were equal at the same level then everyone would just chose the ones that level up the fastest.
In turn based rpgs like pokemon stats mean everything.

Why don't they just eliminate the level cap and allow trainers to level indefinitely? That would certainly bring a greater sense of balance to the table. A level 100 Raticate might not stand up to an equally leveled Dragonite, but a level 200 Raticate could.

Then you could have a level 200 Dragonite just decimate it again.
Seriously, if you wanted every pokemon to be the same stats and abilities wise, you might as well have every pokemon be a grey box, have all of them be Normal type, have all their moves be only Tackle, and have the player start in a town called Final Destination where there are no buildings, people or exits. In fact, there's no tall grass either, so you don't ever have to catch a grey box and feel bad when someone you know catches two grey boxes.

Assuming one is leveled that high, yeah... but someone could raise a stronger Raticate.
It opens the game up far beyond what it is now, it doesnt genericize it like you think. Without a level cap you could sign online and have no fucking clue which of the 700-odd Pokemon you'll be fighting and whether or not you can take them.
That's really cool.

That would be terrible, the reason the online mode has a level cap of 50 or 100 and the banning of legendaries is to keep yourself from not getting randomly paired with someone much higher of a level than you.
Dragonite can beat the Raticate normally, but its not invincible.
There are items that help pokemon in battle to even add more fairness.
Going back to your dragonite vs raicate example
-In the match up you could give Raticate a focus sash and counter with ice fang following up with quick attack on the next turn to try and finish the job.
Of course you must know that not everyone will use dragonite and that you just took up one of your slots with a sub par normal type(stat wise).
That's why you get 6 slots that all have various strengths and weaknesses.
The way you want to play would be like playing club basketball with your friends and one day the Miami Heat or Chicago Bulls show up and you have to play them.
No level cap there would just be people cheating much harder then now. Esp if a level 20 has a possibility of playing a level 200.

Uhhh no. Not only can't the stats go up that high due to number limitations, but if you know enough about the weaknesses of your opponent's Pokemon and the Strength of your Pokemon, you can literally beat out your opponent no problem.
Like if you know what you are doing you can pull off beating level 80 Pokemon with level 1 Pokemon.
However I do think they should get rid of the 3 on 3 when you do a battle with someone else, especially in tournaments. You should fight with your full team, and not half of it.

I never said I wanted them to have the same abilities. That would be the deciding factor. Every Pokemon can be raised the strongest, but that doesn't mean they would be raised the smartest.
Think of it this way. Right now in the actual game, you could have one person with a level 100 Dragonite VS another trainer with a level 100 Dragonite. Despite them having the same Pokemon at the same level, the two Dragonites have different moves, and different stats.
One trainer ends up winning the battle, not because he had a superior Pokemon, but because of how he raised his Dragonite, what moves he taught it, what kind of strategies he came up for it. Having a better species Pokemon had nothing to do with winning the battle since both trainers had the same one.
That's how I feel all Pokemon should work. Winning battles would be based on how you EV trained the Pokemon, what unique strategies you came up with, and what moves it knew along with type match-up.
In my version of Pokemon, a level 100 Raticate could beat a level 100 Dragonite if trained properly, had the right moves, and right strategies.

In the real world version of Pokémon, a level 1 Rattata can beat a level 100 Dragonite if with the right item, the right moves, and right strategy. So you're demanding for what already exists.

That's how Pokemon currently IS Koopaul. Raticate has a lot of disadvantages stats-wise, yes, but if an experienced player was up against a less experienced player with a Raticate with high IVs, EVs, and the right moves, Dragonite could still be beaten.
Raticate's speed is actually higher than Dragonite's, it can learn several strong Ice moves which Dragonite is 4x weak against, and it can learn moves like Double Team through TMs that can make it harder to hit.
However, Dragonite is stronger with its base stats total just shy of 200 points. It is far stronger and can learn stronger moves. Part of the fun of Pokemon is that, despite this, Raticate isn't ENTIRELY hopeless fighting Dragonite. Its held items, its moves, its stat values ALL play a part in the fight.
What your argument sounds like is you want Raticate and Dragonite to have the same stats so that there is no advantage or disadvantage of the other. This makes the battle almost pointless, the winner would be decided by who takes the first move and not how good they are. Also, the fact that one is extremely common and one is extremely rare and difficult to level up would be moot.

I never said uncapped competition should be the only option. Of course there could be various level leagues, just like in Pokemon Stadium or some such. All I want is the option for totally uncapped battles, not uncapped battles at the exclusion of more defined rules.

Numbers don't have limits, they're an infinite concept and we as an intellectual society have created multiple ways to represent extremely large numbers in very small spaces of display.

Having higher level caps just creates room for MORE imbalance. What would happen is the Pokemon with higher stat growth would become even HIGHER, and the ones with low growth will be left even further behind. In order to prevent that the already existing stats would have to all be adjusted to accommodate the change, and the change is ultimately pointless. You can really get a similar effect of a level 200 Raticate and a level 100 Dragonite by just having a level 100 Raticate and a Dragonite that just evolved.

lv1 Ratata vs lv100 Dragonite
Give Ratata a Focus Sash
Use Endeavor
Use Quick Attack
Win
It may be cheap, but it's a strategy.
Any Pokemon can compete competitively if you know what your doing. The level cap is fine at 100 because no matter how high it is, weak Pokemon will still be weak and strong Pokemon will still be strong.

Without a level cap, a trainer can just continue bettering their Pokemon. The only imbalance is in the amount of time spent training the Pokemon.
I'm not arguing for a higher level cap, I'm arguing for no level cap at all. Represent levels with exponents if we have to.

What I'm saying is that doesn't sound fun at all. The most powerful player would end up being the one who either wastes more time in the game or cheats to get the highest level possible, which you insist should be infinitely high. That defeats the purpose of strategic thinking.

Hm. I don't know if that would work Kriven. That might mean a lot of broken things may happen. Besides if that were the case it would be a game of who has the highest level Pokemon wins rather than who has the smartest Pokemon. How would tournaments work?
