Hey everybody, I haven't posted here in a long time it feels like...anyway, I decided to try and give the official Pokemon art style a shot(This is my first time trying this style), by making my own Pokemon.

So, for the Grass Starter:


I don't have a name yet for it, but I think that it would have a Pokemon type of "long-jaw Pokemon". As you can see it is based off the Gharial, a type of crocodilian that lives in Asia.

I hope to have the Fire Starter soon, I have a concept down, but nothing colored yet.

So, anyway, what do you think?

I'd say for a first-level evolution it is too detailed and too "evolved", this one would be more suited for the first evolution I'd say.

I'm not familiar with Ken Sugimori's Pokémon style, but the shading looks a bit too blob-like in many parts and doesn't really show the threedimensionality of the object. Also, in areas like the neck, it should go all the way up to the line and not stop shortly before it. You can use selections in your painting program to be able to draw all the way to the line with those blurry pens.

Ok, so that will be the first evolution then, and I'll re-color it to match the look more, but anyways, I did come up with a Starter and the Final Evolution for the grass type.

So, what should I change and keep.

I also will update the First Evolution a bit also, to make a few adjustments, but right now, I wanted to get a base down.

The starter looks too much like the evolution. Maybe getting rid of the teeth and making the snout more stubby instead of long could help making it look more cute /unevolved.
The final one looks over-detailed with the thorns-on-thorns and I'd make the petals of the flower at the tail's tip bigger insted of having many small ones. The tail is broken when you look at the parts to the left and right of the hind legs. Also, the front legs and tail float in the air.
In general, there doesn't seem to change a lot between the evolution steps, aside from things getting more detailed or just more more. Then again, I think several Pokémon actually do just that... dunno!

That second one is way too busy. Pokemon style isn't just about how you shade it or how the eyes look. Try to pay attention to what they do with shape and patterns. I don't think I'm good enough to examine it with real accuracy, but it seems to me that pokemon tend to be simple, sleek, and convey...something or another, usually.

So I typically see certain things emphasized on Pokemon. On the Sandile line, for example, the first things I notice are their eyes and their snouts. They have very distinctive shapes. There are only a few stripes on each one in certain patterns rather than being dispersed all over the body, and they seem to convey (at least, to me...) a sort of "bad" or "prisoner uniform" vibe with "bad guy spikes". Yours just kind of seems like "plant stuff everywhere just because". My eyes don't really have a point to focus on, so all the details just get lost.

I will be picking up again on the starters soon, now with more free time. I came up with the Legendary Trio Pokemon (two in design faze, one still trying to come up with how to make it work). They will be based on Movie monsters and will be the trio of nightmares.

The trio are a Xenomorph (based on the movie "Alien" (Fear of the Unknown), a Werewolf (Fear of Beasts?) and a Vampire (Fear of ____)

Each causes nightmares in the minds of people and pokemon alike.

I also found a common thing among these three movie monsters, they can "infect" people to become one of them. So, my idea is that they can effect pokemon (and people), and they can become these creatures themeselves (the people would only be mentioned in the pokedex, the player cannot actually become said pokemon). So a Bulbasaur could become a vampire, Charmander could become a xenomorph, or a Squirtle can become a werewolf on nights of a full moon. And the types can change a little accordingly.


Like I said, I have two concepts down (one mostly final [the Xenomorph], the other still needs to look more pokemon like [Werewolf]) I was thinking that the Vampire can have two forms, a more humanoid form and a bat form. Those two still need to be constructed.

So, how are these ideas?

Ok, so today, I have decided to make the grass starter and evo's again. This is what I came up with:

As for the legendary trio, still working on them, and along with the region's bird. I also have the fire starter in development.

my problem with this is that he just seems to get bigger and stronger with each evolution
if you look at actual pokemon you'll notice it's more than that, the design completely changes from one evolution to the next
also, try coloring them, color schemes are a big part of the pokemon
