Megaman Legends 3 Prototype Remake, Capcom staff on board
#16
I think the point is that if they were actually trying to please the fans then they would have brought them the real thing...

Capcom: Wow, people love Megaman, let's announce a new Megaman Legends game
Capcom: We'll make sure to make the development closer to the fans, so they can suggest stuff like designs and shit
Capcom: You know what, fuck the fans, we'll cancel this shit out, it's all your fault
Capcom: I'll just make a bunch of horrid flash fangames and call it a day
Capcom: Hey dudes, we finally thought on bringing back MML3. Except we won't work on it, rather take advantage of those fans making yet another 8-bit Megaman fangame in this sea of Megaman fangames
Capcom: We sure know how to please the fans

Again, at least you're getting ANYTHING from it. They could've pulled a Square Enix and slapped a Cease and Desist on it; then you'd never have anything related to the actual game.

I see no reason to hate on this fangame unless it ends up being genuinely bad. Capcom shouldn't have tried to associate with it though. MML3 is still very much a sore spot worth fans and this was kinda dumb.

As for this being "better than nothing", no, no it's not. The Legends games had their own unique playstyle that can't even begin to be captured in 8 bit. They are fully 3D third person adventure games.

So you're saying you'd either want all, or rather have nothing? They've chose the nothing route before and people complained....now that they're choosing something....people still complain?

The problem is that this isn't a Legends game, it's a classic Megaman game with Legends characters. People want a Legends game that plays like a Legends game.

They've already been informed that it's not coming though, at least through the form of MML3. Getting angry at any forthcoming Megaman project, fangame or not, that isn't something that was cancelled is just being stuck in the past, ya know? Nintendo cancelled the third Oracle game. You don't see (or at least that many, if any) fans of the Zelda series complaining everytime a new Zelda title is announced that it's not the third Oracle game.

Look, the fact is that the "legends" game they are promoting now, that is to be some sort of replacement
or apology game for the cancellation of mml3 is in no way, shape, or form a Megaman Legends game.

From your own example, It would be as if they were in prototype stages of a third oracle in its original style,
suddenly abandoned development whilst blame the fanbase for the cancellation, then several months later
released a video showcasing a vaguely similar puzzle game with Oracle 3 stamped on it. It isnt oracle 3,
it isn't anything like the established franchise. Similar isn't IS, and simply cant be.

The argument isn't that people are complaining that they are getting some crappy fangame, Its that Capcom
has decided to tack on some excuse as to why they still have decided to leave a very much wanted game out
of development. Aside from copyrights, this fangame has nothing to do with Capcom, Its a cash grab with no soul.
Not to say that the original freelance hobbyists that began making this fangame were making it without soul to begin
with, but Capcom simply buying them out and taking a free ride to the bank is a dick move.

As consumers we have a right to decide what we spend our money on. If a large portion of your consumer base
continually asks for a product that you already had in development to be finished so that they may purchase it
from you, one can assume that It would be a wise move to deliver that product, regardless of of how you view your
own product. From the same note, It makes no sense to invest time or money into a project that has little or no
support from your consumer base.

Just my 2cents.

TLDR: We don't like this game because it isn't the game we wanted in the first place. It isn't about being "picky"
or "difficult," we just want the opportunity to purchase the game we wanted in the first place. I don't see
anything unreasonable about that.

Before I continue, let me make it clear that I think it's dumb to hate on this fangame. But I also understand the fan rage over Legends 3. Your Oracle analogy doesn't work and here's why:

Nintendo announced the Oracle games as three Zelda games that could port data between each other. Let's pretend that they were also working on the GBA port of Link to the Past, as well as Wind Waker. Nintendo ends up canceling the third Oracle game, but releases the other two. Later, the GBA port of ALTTP and Wind Waker are released.

Now, let's change it to reflect Legends. Nintendo releases Oracle of Ages. Two or so years later, Oracle of Seasons is released. Fast forward ten years, about twenty other Zelda games have been released, as well as countless ports of older Zeldas. But these are Zelda in name only. They have none of the same characters or gameplay. Half are platformers and the other half are RPGs with a grid based battle system.

But fans want another Oracle game, so Nintendo decides to create a short prototype for download on a new system that's about to launch. They are also working on the GBA ALTTP port and Wind Waker. Nintendo says that if enough people buy the prototype, then they will make the new Oracle game. Suddenly, the guy that created the Zelda series gets fed up with Nintendo's policies and leaves to make his own indie company. Shortly after, Nintendo cancels the GBA port of ALTTP and Wind Waker. Then they cancel the Oracle prototype, saying that fans didn't show enough interest in it, despite it never being released to see if enough people showed interest in it! There also has not been a single Zelda game of any kind announced or released since.

That is why there is fan rage, my friend.

I think you guys are assuming that capcom itself is endorsing this when I read (aka skimmed) nothing of the sort in the article. Just that two staff capcom staff members are helping. It could be a display of their personal admiration and appreciation of the fans. I have no reason to believe this is a company-wide endorsement the way of street fighter x mega man

Rereading the article, you are correct. The team making this fangame consists of two separate fangroups,
and two Capcom employees that worked on previous megaman legends titles. Regardless of this, It is
still a 2d "NES style" version of a 3d franchise game that fails to even fit the restrictions of the era of game it is
trying to emulate, or even share a likeness to the game it is being demaked from.

"NES Style" or "8-bit" is not a style, it is a set of technical restrictions that must be adhered to for a game
to be playable on an NES.

Saying that this is a valid replacement for MML3 is in poor taste in my opinion. Whether It is actually endorsed
by Capcom or not is irrelevant to me; the fact that It hasn't been ordered a Cease and Desist tells me that they are
alright with it, and have no plans to ever release a proper version of the game everyone wanted to purchase
in the first place.

All the luck in the world to this fangame team and the MML fan community, I hope the game is good and sheds
awareness at Capcom. Perhaps this could give a push to Capcom towards releasing a proper MML3 in the future.

I won't be getting my hopes up.

This is kind of faulty logic in the world of Capcom. I'm under the impression that a lot of fan works have been treated with leniency by Capcom since before this whole thing started. I know of several pretty prominent Mega Man fangames with years of dev time that haven't been given legal trouble and have nothing to do with Legends. It's not really a company that seems to discourage these types of activities.

Even the Protomen have said "Capcom has been nothing but nice to us since we got this beast rolling" and I'm pretty sure they're just random guys who got together and decided they wanted to play Mega Man-inspired music at concerts. A recent Mega Man doujin album has some old Mega Man composers working on it. Capcom leaving fan works alone and Capcom staff providing support to fan works is nothing new.

NES Style is a style as long as there are people who define it as such (and clearly there are).

Permitting the fan community to create fan material is completely different from endorsing it.

I don't care if there are two guys from Capcom working on this, and I don't care if it's a fan game. The fact that this is being made public is just embarrassing.
If they knew it wasn't coming anyway through, because the company said they weren't going to in the first place...then they're essentially waiting on nothing. They shouldn't take out their rage on an innocent fangame that's just being made for entertainment just because they didn't get a new toy. It's so...childlike.

Honestly it's more insulting that Capcom is promoting these fangames than if they didn't release anything at all. It's great when companies promote these stuff, yeah, but not only the only thing the frachise has anymore is these -same fan games-.

Nobody's complaining about the game itself, altough 8-bit Megaman has been done to death already, because of how easy it is to emulate the style, I'm really sick of it myself (and I loved 9 and 10), but how about Capcom is doing all these stunts that try to come off as "hey guys look we still care about Megaman" and instead really are "hey guys be aware that the only thing keeping this franchise alive is your own hardwork, we couldn't care less, but give us the credit!!!!"

edit: oops I forgot to read page 2...

edit2: yeah nothing really changed from what I said. Just maybe, Capcom isn't -exactly- endorsing this, it really is just some of the most proeminent staff liking the idea and the effort...but, Mega Man fangames don't really get attention in the mainstream media (unless it's like something totally different), I would say we're assuming at this point, but I do believe Capcom is taking the chance to use this as an apology already.

What more, if this game is somewhat sucessful, I don't want it to become a thing at Capcom...

It's not Capcom's fault the fans seem to prefer developing those type of games. Supporting them as a company is much better than treading all over any non-professional fanwork (Square Enix). I don't even think they're taking the credit for the development of the works, as much as they are just making sure the copyright is acknowledged. Megaman IS their property after all. Even if you make a fangame, the material (unless custom, but even then, it's fan material, since it's not completely original in that it's still based on, and set in a copyrighted series) still doesn't belong to you, except maybe the code.

All in all, however, I think...people are getting really defensive over trivial matters though. There are much more important things to get so emotional about, like how high tuition is, rather than not getting a game =O.
