New Super Metroid Sheets
#1
First off, sorry my last request was impossible at this time, but here's a call to arms of a sort. The super Metroid section's more than a bit dated as it were. Big over sized sheets, superfluous frames, and several missing parts. I myself am terrible at ripping, I've tried and failed multiple times. I was hoping a more experienced ripper would be able to get in to the nuts and bolts of the game, find tiles and parts, get those things that were covered by effects and the like.

Just to give an illustration, what I did manage with my meager skills:

Yes, the section needs a lot of help. I've noticed that, too.

Unrelated but interesting:

so I found these distressing things in the rom by the way. I can almost recognize the melting chicken head, but the tortured face doesn't match the few that are in the game.

Whoa, that's weird. I bet there's a lot of stuff in Super Metroid. I don't know how deep into the graphics people have gotten.

I've made a document regarding the Super Metroid sprite format with examples of only the first 210 sprites of the game. Theoretically, someone could code an all-purpose-sprite-ripper that takes the ROM as input and spouts out every goddamn sprite as a result. However, problems:
-iirc the format doesn't specify exclusively where the graphics for the definitions are. Only how they're built.
-i don't know where the tables are
-Samus' sprites are a different format (I think?) I know Auximines did a pretty impressive Justin Bailey-type hack of Super Metroid back in 2007, and I remember seeing his WIP notes of the process. He if anyone knows how Samus' sprites work and possibly even has a document regarding it. I just don't know if he's online anymore Cry

EDIT: i feel like looking into this. Downloading SMILE now...

I was just watching DYKG and it said that Samus's death sprites in Super Metroid are naked in Japan. Is that true? I've never heard that before.

Nope she still in the two piece in Japan death sprites.
Doofenshmirtz: This is a little bit awkward but have you seen my escape jet keys? (Perry nods) What, you have? Well that's great! So where are they? (Perry looks away) You won't tell me? Is this because you don't speak or are you just being a jerk?

The Japanese version of the game is exactly the same as the US version. They're literally the same game.

I've been dwelling into this for the whole day now and I'm kinda sure we can work this out. Apparently the table locations are documented and fortunately contain the information of where the graphics are.

I'm writing a document as we speak oh how a custom program should behave to export literally every frame of every in-game sprite out of the game, excluding Samus and possibly some bosses. Might sound like a big job but the formats are actually pretty simple and if we find a programmer to do this, it wouldn't be as massive challenge as one might expect, pretty straightforward.

I have a good feeling about this.

There's no better person to tackle it than you, Sam. You've done many projects that have boggled my mind.

I'd be glad to be that programmer. I actually had a look at what you linked to in your previous post, but it wasn't enough to actually do much with. If the document you're working on now is complete enough though, I can probably whip something up. I might even be able make it with a GUI to sort of allow people to browse through the sprites.
You may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing that we call "failure" is not the falling down, but the staying down. -Mary Pickford
