We're now in the process of introducing a new "Large Preview" icon on all submissions. This will allow users who are browsing the site to get a better understanding of what they are actually downloading before they import it into whatever they're using.

You'll be able to submit with this large preview icon in place.

Every icon on the site will need to be updated to include this icon. It is an entirely optional aspect of the site, unlike the standard small icons, so you'll likely not see it anywhere for a while, as we are slowly introducing it to models as we go.

The icon looks like this:

A few examples, so you guys can get a good understanding:

If you want to be awesome, you can create icons for your old submissions, or other people, and post them here. We can then edit them in. When doing this, PLEASE post the URL to the model's page, so that it saves us hunting them down. Please save them as .png, too!

This is awesome. I've always wanted to be able to admire models without having to download them and load them into a viewer, or squint at the icons. Obviously it will also help people who actually want to use them, especially if there are lots of similar ones.

Really good idea, I think this will be a great success!

I see it's a different size compared to the original. Which means I'll have to re-do all my preview images, which thankfully isn't a problem as I kept my PNG renders for them all. Or at least most of them. I'll get on that later tonight.

(EDIT: I've given preview images to all of my Blade Kitten, Neptunia and Sonic submissions, and Tom Nook. I'm gonna re-do the renders in a consistent style for the rest of my Animal Crossing submissions tomorrow.)

Well they'll probably end up being remade by staff, and I'm guessing that this wasn't as much of a planned-out and more just-decided-upon thing since even I didn't know about it until the other day.
However they weren't for nothing, they helped out the uploaders by letting them see the models without having to check and confirm that they're good (appearance-wise, anyway), don't worry.

The previews and updated icons are now done for my Mario Sports Mix and Animal Crossing submissions. (I'll get around to making the rest for that later.)

I've got a large stash of Homeworld 2 models to submit, but they are all using the older preview box. Are we able to upload them with this other box for now, and switch to the newer one for all submissions going forward?

I'm afraid we've opted against these icons. It was poor planning on our part way back when, that these icons actually don't suit the site at all, and are inconsistent on borders...

And to answer your actual question, no, please don't upload using those. We're making an admin-side page to tell us which models still need large image previews but it will only work if there isn't one on it at all.

Okay, no problem. I've still got the models and making these previews is an easy thing to do.
