Do you think low-poly game models will ever make a comeback?

tbh rare's games were good looking, yes, but i dont really like their genre :/

i liked mischief makers a ton more (and it being a 2d game and stuff) more because it has pseudo 3D effects. For some reason I tend to favor pseudo 3D than real 3D, because it looks much more impressive (especially if its done in an older console/hardware). See Kirby's Adventure spinning towers, or Dynamite Headdy's everything

I wish I could get some examples but this PC doesn't let me access YT

That was my thought exactly upon first seeing them.

Something I like to look at from time to time is the Lowpoly thread over on the Polycount forums where people make lowpoly stuff regularly and offer C+C.
(seriously, click that link, there's a whole lot to look at)
(they're basically the tsr or pixelation of 3d models)

It's a long thread so I doubt you guys'll read all of it, but I love going through it and looking at all of the images in there.

Another one I like is a game called Turbo Run, which also uses Lowpoly with pixelart textures.

I'm pretty shitty at 3D modeling but I'd love to be able to do this sort of thing one day.

edit- another good thing about using the lowpoly textures is that it's possible to run your game without any real sort of a lighting engine or having to use shaders or anything since you just make all the highlights and shadows using your textures. your pixelart is what makes everything pop, so you don't need all the stuff you'd normally need to make a """""real"""" 3D game look good unless you really just want the extra eye candy.

another edit- regarding the HD oot textures, this is another pack that I like the look of:

The cel shading texture pack.
Gives the game a bit flatter/cartoony look, but still looks good.
I don't like how Wind Waker it gets at times, but in certain situations it looks really great.

For modeling on the cheap, I would say Blender ought to do it. It is a little tricky to use, but it produces some amazing results.

the most common recommendation is blender, for a free program at least

I personally think Blender is a pain to use

I've been messing around with Wings3d, it seems alright, and not to hard too figure out (with a bit of tinkering and fiddling around of course)

If you guys remember saijee (his current username is FromSoySauce), he uses Anim8or which is free and easier to pick up than Blender.

You can get 3DS Max and Maya for free if you have a .edu email address

I don't know if it still works, but a couple of years ago I go a free copy of Maya by signing up as a tutor, it's a little janky and I couldn't begin to tell you if that's legal or not, but at the time it worked without any serious questions asked and nobody raised an eyebrow at it.

Personally I like Blender, it's got a bit of a learning curve (not nearly as bad as it used to be) but has the advantage of being a sort of all-in-one solution, and because it's so widely used there's plenty of tutorials and documentation, along with third party plugins and compatibility.
Most software that works with aspects of 3D modelling has either native Blender support or a compatibility plugin for importing/exporting.

The other reason I would recommend it is that it doesn't hold your hand at all or provide quick fixes to rely on, basically if you can wrap your head around Blender you can then migrate to a more professional (read: expensive) software suite without too much head scratching.

Yes, low poly models should make a comeback, but probably only in indie games and handhelds.

For those who think low poly is ugly, check these out:
I plan on getting into it myself, considering I already make Wii-poly models.

I've had it for a long while now...when I first opened it....it was just overwhelming. There's so many buttons and stuff everywhere. It's something you'll have to dedicate a few hours to just learn how to navigate and what everything does.
