Thanks, the grass is a bit WIP because I haven't bothered giving it texture yet.

Here's something I did in paint because I was bored.

...But since that is too little for a quality post, I'll post some progress.

Only three frames left!

I would like to make a game, but I'm no programmer and I would likely be restricted to using a program like RPG Maker (which is what I used here Gonna Puke ).

That first guy's shoulders (Mario/Wario, is that you???) seem slightly dislocated. The overalls also do not seem to follow the body shape and I'm not sure what's going on with his hands , but I get that it's just a doodle. Face looks pretty cool.

Askeladden seems to be coming out nicely as far as I can tell!
There seems to be a little twitching around his collar area, however...

Actually, on closer inspection...Huh, the animation gets really weird past that fourth frame. Shouldn't his right leg be the one extending on that fifth frame? Somehow, I think you got the leg movement mixed up.

Also, you should probably make his head move sideways a little to go along with his body movement, it looks a tad static as it is.

Well, I recommend making a game with Game Maker Studio, or Unity if you want more freedom. There's plenty of tutorials for GM in their forums if you're interested.

You've got the right idea with the running animation sprite, I'd suggest changing the head a bit to face directly foward, and leave that head for when he's idle. Great work though! ;D

With the trees, I'd suggest making them fade into the background, I'm not sure what kind of lighting you're going for, but it looks as though you're going for a cloudy day for that screenshot. Here's a good example of a foggy forest in pixel art to get a feel for the colors. some simple paralax, fading from a saturated green to a desaturated blue.

Yup, I haven't really got plans to fix it.

Will fix.

I didn't notice it until now, but you're right, I mixed up the legs on frame 5. I'll fix that and the head.

Thanks, I'll try it out!

Game Maker Studio is not good if you're just a hobbyist. Granted, it's easy to learn and versatile/powerful enough to make proffessional-quality games, the price tag in the long run will actually be even higher if you don't buy the full package from the start, which costs 800$. I would suggest learning to use something that's free, and there are plenty of free game devkits out there; I'm even making one myself. Or, you can learn to program with things like Python, Java or C++ with SDL, which is what I'd recommend if you wanna go pro.

Isn't there a free version of Game Maker though?

I have tried learning java before, I made a simple platformer and then I gave up.
I would like to learn how to program, but I don't think I've got time for it.

Since the conversation has slowly moved it's way to programming, I'd just like to drop in here and suggest PyGame. It's an add-on library for Python (previously mentioned by MIDI) which is just about as easy as game programming can get. It already comes pre-packaged with the basics such as window rendering, an FPS clock and hitbox detection, so getting a simple engine up and working really only takes about an hour, depending on how much programming experience you have.

Not to mention, Python's an incredibly straightforward language built for learners. Hello World is just print("Hello, World!") and everything is interpreted in line breaks and indents. No crazy punctuation or public static void main(String args[]) whatsit nonsense. So if you can actually get an engine running in Java, Python should be a piece of cake for you.

I'ma recommend Unity. I haven't really used it, but I know you can use C# with it along with a few other languages of choice. There should be alot of tutorials on unity. Also there are plenty o' plugins and tools or whatchamacallits (that's a word...?) that can help you out with whatever you might need. I'm sure you can find better reasons than I gave if you research it a bit.

Alright, small update.

First of all, new random NPC guy.

Update on the running animation before I start cleaning it. I'm kind of hesitant to continue because it looks... worse than before. I'm not sure why, looks a bit choppy to me.

Also, here's the beginning of a new mega troll.

for the running animation:
since the head isn't changing, it looks totally off (like it's just a sticker that's just pasted on as an afterthought, which, y'know, it literally is); I'd suggest having the head move at least a little, maybe a tiny bit of side to side (but not too much, since that could clash with the aesthetic)

the legs also look like some frames might be out of order or there's too large a gap between some frames (which can be fixed by adding more frames or by editing the offending frames to have less gap). another thing is that the 3/4 view of the upper body is somewhat clashing with the profile view on the legs

actually, looking at it more, it also looks like his butt juts out when his left leg (closer to us) moves forward, which is awkward

That's been mentioned before, and I intend to fix it, I just wanted to post the progress here because a lot of things seemed off. Thanks for the other advice, though.

It seems I have a sort of on/off relationship with Zelda

Originally wanted to do it in the Majora's Mask artwork's shading, but it didn't work
well past the hat. If anyone knows how to pull this off, I would really appreciate help.

Links clothes don't look right for his adult form. He should be wearing his pants under that tunic. I'd say gloves are optional, so you could try with or without those.

As for Game Maker, I think there's still a free version, but it has a limited number of resources you can import, and a lot of basic functions are restricted. I haven't tried Unity2D yet, but from what I've seen, it seems very geared towards platformers.

Sorry, but by adult form, do you mean Fierce Deity Link?
