I'd like to learn

I know you're expert in the field, but I personally like it the other way better.

Please don't attach images. It's actually against the rules. Use an image host instead.
I'm at work posting from my phone so i don't have access to Paint right now so I'll give you some more advice later.
Your lines still need a bit of cleaning so before we move onto your colors, I'll show you how to improve that.

Edit- In the meantime, why not work on cleaning Mario and the green Yoshi?

I haven't read any of the thread other than your most recent post. I'd also like to say that I've been out of the spriting game for a loooong time so I am probably not the best person to be coaching you here, but below are some sequential edits I whipped up really quick.

The first is yours. In the second, I cleaned up your lines a little and "properly" shaded it. In the 3rd, I made some more major edits that stray a bit further from your initial line work. Lastly, I attempted to add more depth and shape without ruining the integrity of the original sprite.

I hope these edits can help you see where your weak points are. Try to strengthen your shapes and frames. A little tip: when making a shape inside of another, avoid using black lines to identify it as a separate shape. Instead, use your colors to define the shape as a separate entity. For example, the arm and leg of the yoshi in your original sprite is identified by the presence of a black line indicating that that arm and leg as independent shapes. In my first edit, I use your darker pink shade to show the shape instead. Additionally this little rule can be applied to shifts in colors. In your sprite, you show the transition of the pink backside to the white belly using a black line. This is unnecessary. I believe in my second edit I abolish the black line. If your are going to make a shift in color, just do it. Don't bridge it with a black line.

Again, I'm very VERY rusty, but I hope this can help you. Smile

EDIT: I noticed on the last page, you are being dissuaded to use lines that touch anywhere other than on the corners. This is a terrible habit to get into and I'd like to correct the behavior. I realize this wasn't the intention of the members pushing you in this direction, but I fear it's the message you received from it. Notice how on the tail of my edit that I make a sharp corner on the tip to represent it coming to a point? Perfectly ok.

I hate to promote my own work here and I realize this piece in particular has been showcased to death by me before, but it's the most recent example I have to share.

Notice how on the blue dog, I thicken and even sometimes double up on the outline? It is perfectly fine practice, and in my opinion a better approach. Outlines should vary depending on the shape you are trying to portray. In some instances on this piece I do not use an outline all together. I don't expect you to try and jump into using these sort of techniques right off the bat--these are things you have to get a feel for in time. But for right now, I'd like you to work on making your lines more concise and deliberate.

Hey, I thought I'd give a go at editing your sprite too:

I tried to get the likeness by using references, then I inspired myself from some artwork to do the shading.

No, no it's fine. I like your design; maybe that should be in a new game eventually...?

UPDATE:[Image: 2ng4t53.png] Kirby

Almost the entire line-art is thickened to extreme measures, and some are thicker than others, very inconsistent. Might want to get that fixed before coloring it.

I suggest you read the tSR's spriting dictionary, you'll learn quite a bit there.

Also, regarding that Kirby sprite,

Quote:RESOLUTION- The pixel's native size. When making sprites, make sure you're using equally-sized pixels in all the piece and DO NOT resize the sprite to make small details. It's very unprofessional and ugly.

Hoooooly crap, wow.

Okay, first off that canvas is gigantic. Resize your canvas to fit what you're showing before uploading. Don't post giant images with mostly empty space like that.

Also,

You used the circle tool. It's really obvious because the circle tool makes terrible circles and you really shouldn't use it (or at the very least, you'll have to work on it to make the circle look better).

As Omnikariz said, you've got pixels of different resolutions on the sprite (the outline of the circle seems to be 20x20 while the rest of the sprite seems to be at 10x10 [also holy crap dude, your sprites don't need to be THAT big for showing. 4x scale is generally good enough in most cases]) so you'll need to put them all to the same scale.
Speaking of your outlines, you've got jaggies on the arms there and you'll need to get rid of those.

Also, your image host changed the image to a jpeg anyway so it's useless. Tinypic really isn't that good of a site to use for uploading images. Try using imgur or minus instead.

Finally, instead of making another new sprite, you should go back and work on your older ones before jumping to something else entirely.
You still have those other Yoshi and Paper Mario sprites that need fixing.

Am I the only one who thought that was official Yoshi's Island artwork

You probably are. Although it is that good. [Image: dNvYvt6.png?1] Jaggies are gone.
