What are you reading?
#1
I've recently been reading more than I have for a while, and I thought why not make a thread about what books we're reading? Sort of like the music, games, and movies threads. Mangas can probably be put here as well, although if you still prefer to talk about them in the anime thread I won't complain.

I recently read and finished The One Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window And Disappeared, which is brilliant. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who wants something humorous, random, and isn't afraid to read 300+ pages (although depending on the text size other editions could have more or less).

I'm currently continuing Gulliver's Travels, I'd taken a long pause in the middle of Part 3 (near the end of him describing the various academies in Balnibarbi). Right now I'm in the middle of Part 4, where he explains a bunch of political stuff to his master Houyhnhnm.

Finally, I was gonna bump the old thread a week or two ago but I couldn't find it at all. Maybe it got swallowed in the big database crash from years ago? Who knows. Anyway if you've been in the happy thread recently, I'm currently reading though my stack of 53 books...

I'm reading the third book in the hunger games trilogy because my friend lent it to me like...a few years ago now and I still haven't read it.

My other friend lent me the first two some years before that, so I should probably finish the trilogy. I find it hard to make the decision to sit down and read, though...

As someone who read Gulliver's Travels before I went off to college, I have to say that it is a pretty good (although lengthy) read. It is very descriptive with the details (especially in the third part) and the satire of human society is very thought out.

Personally, I wasn't that interested with part three because the antics Gulliver went through dwarfed in comparison to his misadventures in parts one and two. By part four, though, that's when it becomes a lot more interesting for me and really makes you think about the human race as a whole.

Not to derail but

I feel like the anime thread should just be left to... well, anime

because mangas are books and not every manga is based on a specific anime

that would mean I would have to go to the thread about Asian TV just to post about a few Asian books that I am reading

(I know that was a bad way to word it but whatever)

point is I really think we should be able to post about whatever it is that we may be reading

just kinda doesn't make sense to me

That's fine, I suppose I'll edit the OP then. It's not a big deal really, I just didn't know if I should be like "post here about manga instead of the anime thread" since that was already a thing. But yeah it's cool.

I agree, the third part is a bit less interesting after experiencing the first two, especially on Laputa and Balnibarbi (although the explanation of Laputa's floating was pretty nice). Glubbdubdrib and Luggnagg were more intriguing though, with the necromancy and the Struldbruggs. The fact that Japan was aware of Luggnagg was something I wasn't expecting either (although I have to admit it's probably the least strange country he discovers).

Thanks Smile

I am currently partway into chapter 2 of Oninbo and the Bugs from Hell, Vol. 1.

It's a pretty good horror manga, got some gore and especially creepy bits, and I'll admit that I like the designs of the Bugs from Hell. I also kinda like how it's got detective vibe to it, in which Oninbo is searching persistently for the bugs that ail people, even if it's for his own benefit. You can get to know the characters and are also given a taste (no pun intended) of their daily lives, even if it's only for that chapter or portion of a chapter.

Other things I have yet to read manga-wise are Vol. 2 of Oninbo, Moe U.S.A. and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Ginji's Rescue Team. I also have a few comic books lying around that I got from a little comic-con (on their Free Comic Book Day) held at the library where I was up visiting my folks in WV.

I think I've recently become a lot more interested in reading in general than I was before so I feel like I could pick up most any story and read it.

Ginji's Rescue Team, huh? I actually have the original manga booklets that you get from Nintendo Power. It was a real treat to find those.

Fun Fact: That manga series was written by the same authors who drew most of the Zelda manga adaptions.
