Honestly I don't miss ether Squirtle or Ivysaur.
Sure, they could be added in as DLC, but we already have enough pokemon from the Kanto region as it is I think that Pokemon Trainer with Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard as a team really over-represented pokemon from the first generation when all we really needed was Charizard to go along with Pikachu, Mewtwo, and Jigglypuff. Far as I'm concerned Lucario and Greninja are perfect to represent the new pokemon games and we really don't need anymore than that.
Besides I never really like Pokemon Trainer's gimmick, which would have been wasted code given the technical limitations of the 3DS. And this is actually the same reason why I don't miss the Ice Climbers... Unless they just added in Popo without Nana.
That just as far as I am concerned when everyone is talking about characters such as these being on the roster.

So, who else thinks it might be possible that there might be something else besides Mewtwo in development? Granted, there's time for a break in there more than likely, but doing from November is a long time.
Of course he could very well be the only character added and they use the rest of the time for balancing.

We all remember discussing the extra space on the character select screen of the 3DS roster there. I think...
4 More Characters could easily fit in there. In fact, the perfect amount of space is left for it; the first we know of being Mewtwo. I don't doubt that there is a possibility of more downloadable content on the way in the future.

Given Nintendo's latest trend to create DLC packs (I'm not referring to the Season Pass-like deals), I imagine Mewtwo to be released in a pack of some sort when it's ready. Stages and maybe additional skins for existing fighters (Dry Bowser please), more playable characters if we're lucky.

Their concerns were addressed with fifty other characters. If they don't like Ice Climbers, it's not that hard for them to "ban" the pair while the rest of the people can use them for fun.

ahahahahaha no really
Metaknight was broken as shit in Brawl, and he was only banned in certain tournaments for a limited amount of time. If they aren't going to ban Brawl MK, I don't see a full on character being banned ever

Yo, the hell with K. Rool and Bandana Dee. Bluster Kong and Escargoon would make better DK/Kirby newcomers.

After reviewing a bunch of gameplay footage from the media event, I gotta say I really disagree with the sentiment that Ridley looks like he was originally intended to be a fighter. He doesn't really act like a fighter at all, even less so than the Flying Men or many assist trophies. If anything he's more reminiscent of a boss from the Subspace Emissary. When you bring into consideration the early Direct where Ridley was first teased as a shadow, I think it was pretty obvious that he was always intended to be a stage hazard, especially considering the context that it was shown off in. In fact, consider the fact that the stage itself was complete enough to be shown off at the time. The stage is clearly designed around the idea of Ridley's appearance as a hazard rather than him being a last minute addition. Even if you can ignore the fact that the huge, open stage is not very fitting for the Metroid franchise, the phazon canisters that Ridley utelizes have been present on the stage since the very beginning. Keep in mind how much time must have gone into designing the stage and Ridley himself before his shadow was ever even revealed. Heck, he was hinted at even earlier than that when the first image of the stage was revealed last August.
I honestly think people claiming that he was "clearly designed to be a fighter" is just yet another act of denial, just like back when his shadow was initially revealed and everyone refused to believe he was nothing more than a stage hazard despite the fact that clearly that is exactly what they were telling us. I really believe that this was going to be his intended role from the very beginning of development, and level of dropping the 3DS version would have changed that.
But I'm sure everyone and their mother will try to argue against me on this. So this is all I am going to say on the matter.
On a different tangent, though, I did notice something odd about Ridley on the stage. It seems that beating him to get him to join your team does not actually alter his behavior at all. The only thing that changes is that his attacks no longer effect you. But he doesn't actually become more aggressive against your opponents or anything. In fact, he even seems to still target you, despite the fact that your on his team and his attacks won't harm you anyways. Look at this video for example, where at 1:15 he shoots a fireball towards his own partner, despite the fact that the actual opponent was way over on the other side of the screen. Weird.

His boss behavior is way too defined to be a scrapped character, and even then they are clearly comfortable releasing a character after launch, so...
A lot of detractors on the Ridley-being-a-boss front originally also said how it was strange he wasn't shown sooner, but the direct showed there was a LOT more going on than we originally thought. Three basic interactive enemies, destructible environments and a boss that can power up is a lot more than people expected. As a supporter of playable Ridley, all this softened the blow quite a lot for me.
Of course I can still dream of DLC, and the vs match of the century of player Ridley vs CPU Roidley.

Maybe they're waiting for the release of the next Metroid game, where Ridley is cloned into a humanoid body.
Bahahaha, as if that would ever happen.
A new Metroid game, that is.

EDIT: Anyways, on the note about Ridley being designed a boss character.
Is it that big of a shocker? I mean it was kind of hinted awhile ago that Ridley was going to be a stage hazard instead of a playable character or assist trophy when they announced a few characters that were going to be on the roster. I'm just throwing it out there because it seems like everyone sort of forgot about that one specific video where sakurai revealed some of the details about boss fights.
I feel like everyone going on about whether or not he was designed like a fighter, in the end we kind of all knew that he wasn't going to be playable even though some of us might have not been able to admit it at the time. I think the fact that we get so hyped over these things we kind of let our expectations go higher than they need to.
