GAMER LOUNGE 20XX (NO CASUALS!!)

I liked Hyrule Warriors a lot, and I like One Piece, so I think I would like Pirate Warriors... are there differences between the games or should I just jump to PW3?

I think it plays a little more like a DW game than Hyrule Warriors does - but yeah, you can just jump right into PW3.

I'm a cheapass tho and I've been buying PW1 and 2 digitally only while still looking for a physical copy of 3 Tongue

Have you guys ever noticed how Clover/Platinum REALLY loves using time slowdown/stopping mechanics as core gimmicks for almost all of their games. Such as

- Viewtiful Joe, where slowing down time is one of the two core mechanics of the game.
- Okami, stopping time in order to use the brush.
- Bayonetta's witch time, obviously.
- Metal Gear Revengance, slowing down time in blade mode so you can perform precision cutting.
- Wonderful 101, time slows down when you're drawing your shapes/lines.

And those are just the games I've actually played. There's probably more examples.

Just an observation.

I can already see Splatoon fan-characters being the new Sonic fan-characters. Except this time we won't have to deal with sprite recolors.

Well, people now have access to SFM/GMOD, so they can take models and edit them however they want...It may not be as common as sprite recolors, but there's an uprising. Tongue

No, it's definitely not the Splatoon fan characters.  I rarely see those.  It's the Undertale fan characters and fan art.  Those and FNAF fan characters and fan art, as well as the ponies.

All three of them on their own are enough to rival the Sonic fan character and recolor ocean.  Splatoon...not so much. I get at least one or two things from at least one or more of those three in my inbox daily, and they get insta-deleted.

It's really sad when people stop drawing their own, real original characters, not based in any existing universe but their own crafted universes, in favor of doing endless fan work.

We do have original ideas, including me. But some of us are uncomfortable with showing them due to fear of theft or plagiarism.

The problem with most fan characters is how most use the same body shapes and features rather than go with something unique.
- Pony characters suffer from same-face syndrome due to how cheap, bland, and lazy the art style for Friendship is Magic is.
- This is one of the things Archie Sonic's current universe is criticized for. They have the problems mentioned above.
- I don't even bother with Undertale or FNAF so I don't know much about fan characters based on either.

Splatoon fan-characters & personas are indeed a thing, but it isn't too hard to make them. Just do a caricature of yourself as an inkling.
But I wouldn't mind seeing more characters based on animals not featured in the game. Like theses ones I drew.
Doodle one - Three different sea animals
Doodle two - Nautilus character
Doodle three - Sperm Whale character

If there's one issue I have with fan characters, it's the TMNT ones. Because most I've seen are self-insert Mary Sues of fangirls.

That's because nowadays it's very hard for artists and writers to get noticed unless they draw fanart. Plus, some people might just not be good at creating original things. There's so much out there now that nothing is really original anymore. And that makes it difficult. I've also heard from many of the more popular artists that even their original work doesn't get recognized as much as their fanworks.

Also, I haven't seen many Undertale FCs... Instead of an abundance of OCs, there's an abundance of AUs. I'll take AUs over FCs any day, to be perfectly honest. Tongue

I'd say that'd be their own fault then, for selling out, just to get more traffic. Drawing endless amounts of fanart won't make people suddenly be attracted to their original works either, because what they're there for is more fan art. They end up digging their own grave in that regard.

And no one's saying it has to be purely, 100% never been done before when we use the word original. We're just saying their creations that aren't set in someone else's universe, or based on someone else's characters (i.e. a character that could possibly be original, but is obviously borrowing heavily from the Sonic art style.)

Yeah I know how that is. I too have my own original universe but was too afraid to go deep into it, fearing no one would care.

Besides I think being creative with someone else's universe can be pretty fulfilling. I always wanted to see a game starring Waluigi. And since Nintendo ain't gonna do it,it might as well be up to the fans.

Hey Koopaul, have you played Psycho Waluigi? If you haven't, you should.

As for me, I found a ton of awesome original work way back when I was still searching for fanart. That was a different time, but it illustrates the point. I never would have found them otherwise.

In some cases, a thing like "came for the fan art, stayed for the artstyle" kinda thing can happen here, especially when the artist has a distinctive artstyle.
Also, the motivation from fleeting popularity from fanart could propel people to continue improving (by constantly making new pieces), as well as having less design work involved.

True, that can happen. Mostly just speaking from experience on my end. As long as I've been on dA, I still get people coming through my super old, and put into scraps Family Guy fan art from many years ago, when I was still learning to draw, and that's all they ever cared about.

Yes, Psycho Waluigi is what I was referring to. It's proof that fans can create great works that are worth it.
