but i wonder if its really made by ya...
Was Rystar so convincing .?

(08-29-2014, 05:46 PM)Rystar Wrote: You're still shopping this "custom" tileset around?
1. It's not the exact tileset, it has upgraded shades and drawings.
2.Why am I shopping if I'm not charging it.

(08-29-2014, 05:46 PM)Rystar Wrote: I remember when you first posted this on another forum and... unfortunately, nothing seems to have changed at all. Once again, the vast majority of your tiles are nothing more than bad recolours of this tileset made by DragezeeY. What little you did change is insignificant because you continue to blatantly steal from others and not bother trying to do anything on your own.
I'm fine with you saying these are bad colors, but you're starting to say things you don't even can properly proof them.

(08-29-2014, 07:30 PM)Rystar Wrote: The easiest place to see it is the ice ground tiles. Compare those with DeeY's regular ground tiles. It's also really glaring in the pipes and mushroom powerups too (that is, compared to the original pipe and mushroom powerups, of course).

(08-29-2014, 08:54 PM)Rystar Wrote: Regardless, this looks like the exact same sheet he shared two years ago. Something's not right here, and I don't appreciate it very much...
I forgot to mention, it's not an entirely new way to make sprites of mine. I didn't see reasons to remake some of my old gfxs, so I just edited them. That's why I like to call it a sequel.

(08-29-2014, 08:54 PM)Rystar Wrote: If you don't think it's stolen, that's fine with me, but it really is quite blatantly lifted from DeeY's tileset. Just because they're both Mario tilesets doesn't make it okay for them to look as similar as they do - I've seen quite a few Mario tilesets of varying sizes that look noticeably different from each other. Hell, DeeY's own previous tilesets look pretty different from his later ones.
Well, sir, we're talking about Mario graphics. Just because it's custom, it doesn't mean I have to make spores instead of spots or a plastic pipe instead of a metallic one. And because a user is making a 2nd tileset doesn't mean (s)he'll change completely his/her spriting style.

(08-29-2014, 08:54 PM)Rystar Wrote: C'mon guys, this isn't that hard to see. Just because he's not taking someone else's work and calling it his own doesn't mean he isn't using someone else's work as a poorly constructed base for his own.
I'm not using anything as base. I made each sprite from zero. I just picked DeeY's as a reference (and he wasn't the unique), and then I started to draw every pixel of it.

(08-29-2014, 09:25 PM)DragonDePlatino Wrote: Fffffff-

Well, now that I look at it, this tileset really doesn't look like the other one at all...If anything, BMSantos might have just closely referenced it when he was making his tileset. And I do that a lot myself while learning, so no problem here.

I probably should have looked more into this before I posted my silly joke. Sorry, BMSantos if I offended you. Just gonna take that post down now.
I didn't see the joke, but whatever it was, I wouldn't mind anyways, so don't worry about that.

And to clear the things once for all: These sheets are 100% custom, scribbled from zero, and DeeY, along with others, were only my inspiration.

I just want to apologize for the accusations myself. I didn't mean to cause this whole theft trampling on (and the following not-theft trampling on that I endured, perhaps rightly so), but I guess I was just looking out for an old friend who was pretty badly shaken by stuff like this when you posted your tile sheet a year or two back. It was more than that of course (I don't talk to DeeY anymore, after all), but those experiences convinced me enough that you were back and not doing anything differently, so for jumping the gun, I'm really sorry Sad

I just wanted to say I am extremely sorry for what I said. If you really did make these yourself, then that's great. I am so, so, sorry about everything, hopefully you'll forgive me.

Okay, understandable.

That's okay, dude. But next time you face something like this, look carefully at the sheet before accuse someone of theft.

BTW, now we can appreciate some blockers.

Hmm...those look really nice, but I don't like the white highlights used on the brown bricks. You should probably use a nice golden color instead. Ohh! And maybe you could add some anti-aliasing the note blocks? I know some people like the sharp look but a smoothed-out style might look better.

But other than those nitpicks, no major complaints here!

I will check the white highlight. About anti-aliasing... I don't know, I think it doesn't fit for my style.

I have to agree with Dragon on those harsh highlights, the only surface that would have white highlights in real life are very reflective materials, like glossy metals and glass.

As for the anti-aliasing, you may be right about the style... but make sure you aren't shortchanging yourself as an artist. Anti-aliasing is an important skill in pixel art (one I'll admit I don't have) and just make sure you aren't wanting to do it because you are not comfortable with it.

All that aside, I would kind of like to see a little more hue shifting between the lighter and darker shades in the blocks. I think the only block that does have any is the orange brick on the right side.

An example of hue-shifting in a palette:

As opposed to this:

which comes off as sort of dry or dull (it is rather unlikely to come across materials that would have a shading like this in real life so it is a bit less appealing)

Yay, bumpdate.
1.Now the Blocks set are very good enough.

2.I've noticed that Items' lightsource was in top, instead of top left, so I've reshaded them (except stars and alt. flowers, because they act like a lightsource); and the cherries was added.

3.The palette has been modified, and for the last time. When I finish them, I'll put a warning about recolor.

I don't feel comfortable using hue-shift; I prefer to put a neutral hue. Basically, I like to follow the official graphics, and they don't seem to use hue-shift too.

I think the shading on the poison mushroom looks the best, but then there's things like the hanging fruits that look beveled because the highlight follows the edge. Needs a little work, but overall good progress.

Can I let you in on a little secret? While it's fine to copy an official sprite style, you need to understand that not all official sprite styles are actually appealing. Just check out a lot of the SNES sprites for example. If you look at the sprite work from a game like Super Mario World or the Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, those styles lack in comparison to nearly any sprites you'd find on this part of the forum. Since the user-made sprites are generally appealing, it's best if you follow any advice they give you, so you can eventually make sprites that awesome someday.

it's ok to suck, sucking is not bad, just try and aim to always do your best!

Thanks, I didn't noticed that.

By "follow the official graphics", I meant I use the recent 3D artworks (i.e. NSMB2's, SM3DW's) as a sight base.
