Let me rephrase this, the shading on that Kirby isn't particularly round, it doesn't feel like that of a sphere, specially when we are talking about Kirby, a round being. It's using too many colors to show a round idea, which ultimately leads to making it look a bit jagged. You don't need a lot of colors to show detail. Take a good look at this. This shows a bigger Kirby, with about as many, if not less colors (Though I could edit it and make sure it has even less colors).

Your current Kirby has got a case of banding. Unless this is intentional, you have several choices: add more colours until the banding isn't visible anymore, reduce your colour count, or tweak the palette with a change of the layers of shading. The banded parts have low contrast, and in the case of Kirby's body, it clashes with the dark outline. The AA around the eyes could do with a bit more contrast, for more effectiveness.

In terms of design, I seem to recall Kirby's body being closer to the ground, so you'd see more of it between his feet. Perhaps his hand is too rounded, too?

I think the main issues with Kirby's shading is that it comes off as a close spotlight and appears linear- which adds to the banding effect.

Real quick, to get a graphical intuition of why banding happens in this context:
In a simplified sense, the amount of brightness an area has, due to a directional light (the sun), is related to the dot product between the surface normal(N) and the light direction(L): |N||L|cos@ = brightness, where @ is the angle between the vectors.  Note the "cos@", that's the key.  Given that the angle between the light and spherical surface changes linearly, there is a one-to-one relation between the cos@ curve:

What's the point?  The output of cos@ isn't linear, therefore, shading isn't linear... The space between shades shouldn't be evenly spaced out on a spherical object.  No matter how many colors you do or don't have, you'd still issues. (Though, more shades makes it easier to accidentally create banding)

This has the obvious effect of appearing visually inconsistent with the volume.

...I don't draw enough to give you a non-mathematical answer =/...

Jayman, it's already being stated that there was a problem in the face. As to how to fix it, I recommend making the head a bit more rounded, specially with the hair, that way you can have more room to work with.

I am terribly sorry. I did not see the part about how the face needed more work.

The hair shading could stand to be more saturated.

Rosilina looks sweet, but I like some elements of the first one better. I think the shading got a bit too dark on the edge of your dress.

Nice stuff though, for sure!

It's better, but it's flat, jagged, and isn't very instantly recognizable. The elbow also looks more like a curve than a bend. And she has no butt.
