But I still don't see that happening.

I think that would work too. But why isn't that happening?

I seem to remember that the ice climbers were cut because of space for the game?

I really don't remember.

They were cut due to hardware limitations. The task of rendering eight playable characters at once in addition to the stages, items, and NPCs summoned by Pokéballs and Assist Trophies was too much for the 3DS to bear.

I second this. Since the N64 SSB has aged quite poorly, it would be great to get remastered and remade versions of all of its stages.

I'm with this most of the way, although we don't need both Sector Z and Corneria... I'd say combine similar stages where possible... I guess this is how I would do past stages (this list will kind of ignore what SSB4 has already done):

Peach's Castle (Sky) - A slight change in title to avoid confusion with the Melee stage. Like Wuhu Island and Pilot Wings, the stages use the same assets (and maybe as a small detail, characters not currently being used can be seen Smashing on the Peach's Castle below).
Great Fox - The Great Fox actually travels between Corneria and Sector Z. The platforms are the same, but the setting is not.
Battlefield - All versions are selectable
Final Destination - All versions are selectable
Flat Zone - Single stage that shifts between all represented Game & Watch titles, including those featured in Flat Zone 2
Icicle Mountain/Summit - The stage begins in Icicle Mountain and proceeds pretty much normally, but eventually the fighters will reach the Summit, which behaves just as the Summit stage had in Brawl. After the avalanche, the stage will slowly begin climbing Icicle Mountain again.
Mushroom Kingdom (Melee) - Borrows the name "Mushroom Kingdom 2" to differentiate it from the N64 Mushroom Kingdom.
Subcon - Name change, but the stage is still the Mushroom Kingdom II stage from Melee.
Pokemon Stadium - Merges both Pokemon Stadium and Pokemon Stadium 2. Add a few more elements.
PictoChat - Merges PictoChat and PictoChat 2
Smashville - Name change for "Town and City", which contains aspects of Smashville anyway.
Game Boy - Replaces the GB Dream Land stage, but keeps the elements of it. Adds some new environments, like Super Mario Land.
Boxing Ring - Add a "King Dedede" variety.
Gaur Plains - 3DS version and Wii U version can both be played as Alternate Stages (Mushroomy Kingdom style)

Other stages I want:

Trophy Tussle (Melee) - Allows for versus matches on the three Trophy Tussle stages from the Melee event matches (Goomba, Entei, and Majora's Mask). The stage is randomly selected or can be player selected, just like all other stages with alternate forms.

Metal Cave (N64) - Pleeeasssseeee

Hopefully we get to see the cut veterans, like Lucas, Wolf, maybe Snake, and if God is merciful, Roy.

When I wanted to see Delfino Plaza as a returning stage, I wanted to see the Grand Pianta Statue & the red canon to Pinna Park in the background.

So yeah, I'd also say that Ninty should retool the Ice Climbers to only be the singular Popo at most times; have Nana appear only for brief moments for certain attacks and maneuvers. The capabilities of this revised Popo/Nana would ideally be a middle ground between the gameplay of a singular Ice Climber and having both present. That could not only likely solve the hardware issue of essentially having two characters in one (unless the Ice Climber issue was moreso the amount of models on the 3DS than having so many AIs present), but it could also alleviate issues of cheapness.

But yeah, I'd also like to see N64 stages return, sort of. Except I'd prefer to see them revamped akin to how some of them will be in Project M 3.5, instead of being pure ports. (Seriously check out Hyrule Castle and Metal Cavern in the 3.5 trailer they're gorgeous.)

In addition, certain costume DLC (for both regular characters and Miis) could be neat. Big ones I can think of for regular characters are Protoman for Megaman and OoT Ganondorf.

Not really knowing what the poblem was for the 3DS and Ice Climbers, we can't really say how it should be fixed... For all we know, there's a workable solution that Sakurai already knows about but which would have taken too many resources away from the rest of the game's development. Now that we're a little away from that kind of pressure, maybe the team will have the proper amount of time to fix them.

I wouldn't be opposed to the characters appearing differently in 3DS from their Wii U versions... I mean, if the Wii U version can handle the Ice Climbers as they alreaady played, I wouldn't have an issue with that. Meanwhile, make the 3DS version a little more limited. Literally a single model that includes both of the characters, who don't separate and share a percent meter. This will limit the AI needed as Nana is never away from Popo, but it would also allow them to keep their double-character gimmick.

I think they could pull a Duck Hunt with the Ice Climbers; they both appear at the same time onscreen, but they share a single AI. That way, instead of controlling two identical characters at the same time, you're just controlling one. Since the second Ice Climber no longer acts on its own, this means many of the techniques once possible in Melee and Brawl (infinite chain grabs, for example) are no longer possible.

I mean, that sort of defeats the purpose of the ICs, and the competitive community will be less than pleased about this change, but it could work.

[I hope I explained it clearly]

I wanted to actually see Delfino Plaza with people. Why is it still a ghost town? One of my fondest memories of that place is how it has a bustling community and is so alive.
