General Sonic is Terrible Thread

I won't go into too much detail because I'm way too tired right now, but here's my tier list of Sonic games...

Tier One (Great):

Sonic Adventure 2: Battle
Sonic Adventure DX

Tier Two (Good):

Sonic Heroes
Sonic R
Sonic & the Black Knight
Sonic & the Secret Rings

Tier Three (Leaning Toward Bad):

Shadow the Hedgehog
Sonic Colors

Tier Four (Bad):

Sonic Generations
Sonic Unleashed

I wasn't sure whether I should include Sonic the Hedgehog 4 or the Sonic Rush games? I generally liked all of those (I actually really like Sonic 4 shake it off... shake it off...). I also didn't include things like Sonic the Fighters or Sonic Chronicles (though I like both of those too).

Thought I was the only one that thought this game was alright...

(I mean yea anyone's gonna talk about the music but I read somewhere that the reason it sounds like a trainwreck is because Bioware was being assholes to the composer and forced him to use (shitty) music software they've never used before. Even without knowing that though, the game actually had some really good ideas with its music (those battle themes :h: that I would effing love to see remixes done of it)

I'm sorry what? Generations was, IMHO, the perfect 3D Sonic game. The gameplay for both classic and modern Sonic was perfect, the level design was great, and even though it was short, it has lots of replay value, and a dedicated modding community. Plus, I was born and raised on Sonic, and being that Generations was a pure nostalgia trip...yeah.

Then again, this is coming from the same person who dislikes Sonic Adventure 2, so...

Hold on woah woah. The gameplay for classic Sonic is NOT perfect. I will just say that right now. I agree on all other cases though. SEGA just can't seem to nail those beautiful physics down anymore, and not making the spindash absolutely ridiculous. The level design isn't very S3K tier either, as well as containing scripted events...

Not a fan of modern linear hallway boosting, so I could care less about that half of the game. But everyone agrees that was at least done right, so I'll take their word for it.

... Sigh, I hate the fact that I'm still a fan of the series in general. I haven't owned a game since Unleashed really, only just somewhat trying out the later titles with friends or rentals. Its just full of major disappointment sometimes, the series as a whole is a bit embarrassing to even be a fan of these days because many of its titles can be considered a joke. The whole community is majorly divided because SEGA tried to draw in too many different people from all sorts of ridiculous playstyles, art styles and just generally varying directions. Boom might be the nail in the coffin for caring about another game at least.

Try not thinking about them in terms of how they compare to the original Genesis games and instead just focus on if you enjoy them or not based on their own merits alone. This is something that drives me crazy in any given franchise.

Guess we're doing this now.

#1. GREAT

Sonic Adventure DX - This was one of my earliest sonic titles, so I'm definitely a little biased, but it's my quintessential 3D sonic experience and nothing has really compared since then. Even today I'll load it up on the Wii and give it a playthrough at random times.

#2. GOOD
Sonic Adventure 2: Battle - Hours lost playing this.
Sonic Generations - Most fun I've had playing a Sonic game in years.
Sonic Unleashed: Daytime - A lot of fun, stages were beautiful as well

#3. MEDIOCRE
Sonic Heroes - It was unique, let's at least give it that.
Sonic Colors - Haven't played as much of this as the others, but it's definitely not a bad game.
Shadow the Hedgehog - SEGA's glorious attempt to try and make Sonic edgy. Game was still enjoyable to some extent. Trying to complete a level a certain way to unlock a level you wouldn't play otherwise proved to be relatively fun.

#4 BAD
Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 - I actually made it pretty far in this game unfortunately, expecting it to get better, over and over. It didn't.
Sonic and the Secret Rings - Decent idea, cool environments, poor controls and basic execution. Fun to look at, not to play.
Sonic Unleashed: Nighttime - Dragged out and utterly boring

#0 HAVEN'T PLAYED
Sonic and the Black Knight - Just like Secret Rings, so I'm not in any hurry to play.
Sonic Boom - I... don't think so.
Sonic Lost World - Seems okay, also not in much of a hurry to play.

So I watched a little bit of the cartoon online and ... I don't really get it?

I mean, the writing is pretty solid for a kid's show and I was certainly entertained, but I don't understand the show's premise. It's not like the old Sonic cartoons where the Sonic crew was in hiding from Robotnik who was terrorizing the world with his machines. They aren't even in hiding, Eggman literally waltzes right into Sonic's living quarters and has civil interactions with the crew two episodes in a row. Eggman doesn't seem to be trying to take over the world or anything, he seems to only be interested in destroying Sonic specifically, and I'm not even sure he's actually out to actually kill him because it seems more like a friendly rivalry than anything. So yeah ... I don't get the point of anything that's happening?

The creators didn't want the show to have any continuity at all. They wanted it to be like Looney Tunes rather than an adventure series.

Well when you're making tiers you kind of have to compare these games to others. You have to decide "What make them worthy to be Top Teir?" Sure I can enjoy these games on their own and love them for what they are, but we're talking tiers here.

As far as I know, I'm the first person to specifically create a tier hierarchy using that terminology...

I'm sorry if it's caused confusion. I just find it easier to organize my thoughts that way.

Did Tails just actually drown in (practically shallow) water? I'm starting to think that Big Red Button didn't get the memo that Tails swam in not only Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but also in the first episode of the animated series the game is based on.
