Toad, Toadette, and Gender

Holy shit.
I get out of bed and people are arguing?!
Instead of reading WAY to deep into this, i have a better idea: Why give a shit?
I mean, doesn't EVERYBODY hate toads or something?
It's a video game. Why are we going THIS deep into discussing gender?
It baffles me that people actually have logical debates over stuff like this.

Right, I think the news is not nearly as political as it was intended by blank. However, it is a starting point for a discussion on gender.
So how do videogames talk about gender, or at least how is it used in videogames?
For my part this makes me think of the way Osamu Tezuka had a set of characters, which he could star in his works - it was his star system, exactly like a star system for real actors. Some characters, like Uran, are androgynous, and she has a tomboyish attitude - marking her out from the "norm."
Anyway, my point is that Nintendo probably work the same way with their characters, which in each game act another character. Prior to the 18th century, men played women in plays (because female actresses were considered prostitutes at the time, and so racked up a pretty bad reputation). More interestingly, the Takarazuka Revue, a Japanese all-female theatre troupe in which women also played male roles as well as female roles, left a strong impression on Tezuka, who was interested in hybrids of all kinds.

I'm talking about These last few pages.
That makes sense, but these like, 4 pages make me wonder how we've come.
Like first of all, myamoto (or however you spell it) didn't even conform it, and as such, why should we get into a REALLY personal debate of gender
when we could do better things like actually be nice to each other.
It makes me wonder why die hard nintendo fans have arguments with actual LOGIC when what they're fighting over is a game for kids, made by a company that has a reputation making games FOR kids, and that's about it.
I think we should just lock this thread for the sake of absolute stupidity.

We don't need super personal arguments about gender when the starting subject is about the creator of captain toad treasure tracker making a statement that toads are genderless.

So why should we argue about gender?

It's now been Confirmed???(not sure if confirmed but w/e), so why argue about gender when we already know that TOADS ARE GENDERLESS.

Now that blank is banned, that we're beyond these past pages, we can turn a new page on the discussion. The point of this thread wasn't to confirm whether Toad or Toadette were genderless or not. It isn't an answer like "Yes", "No", or "42".
This argument - or should I now say discussion - exists, because regardless of Nintendo's intent, you cannot pretend that games are outside the influence of the real world or exempt of ideology. Have you considered how toys for children are vehicles to gender roles, for example?

I for one agree with Chris2Balls and say we should get past these last few...."discussions", let's say.
In any case, i find it weird that they went this route when in past games they would refer to toads as "him" "her" etc. as should be obvious.
What I DON'T understand is WHY they did that.
I honestly makes no sense to me, It mist be a Japanese thing...
Now that i think about it, this thread has like, no discussion value.

So if the Toads as a species are born sex neutral, then take on a gender based on their preference... then wouldn't that make them the gender they want to be? Like unless I'm misunderstanding something, the idea that their gender is independent of their sex (or lack thereof) is pretty progressive.

Also dang it, why'd Sengir have to leave again, I liked having her around.
